MOT Failure - ABS

Hi all

BMW in Dumfries (Harry Fairburn) has just failed my E85 as the abs light is on. £2100 to repair. Does this sound like value for money?

Any suggestions for a second opinion near Dumfries?

Anyone want to buy a 2008 3.0si auto with no service or an MOT??

Seriously, what would an MOT failure be worth - £4k??

Thanks

I'd say before what sounds like a huge knee-jerk, I'd see if anyone nearby has a code reader and would help diagnose a bit better.
Then once you have a more targeted idea of the fault you should be able to find someone who'll help you out a whole lot cheaper than that I'd have thought.

Could be just a sensor or an abs module repair

BMW Main dealer won’t do that so will try to sell you a new abs pump/motor which is probably what the £2100 is for

You need to take a step back before agreeing to that

The issue, IMHO, is that now, taking an E85 or E89 to a BMW main dealer is going to be bad news..the currnet technicians will be not be weened on old tech..any problem will be solved by throwing large amount of genuine BMW parts!

Even some BMW guys are selling their old DSC units off for £300..

So its likely to be one or more reluctor rings which are zround £15 each for OE quality or a DSC unit ..£300 max and maybe less..an Indy is your best option IMHO!

Thanks guys. I am a little peeved. I have done less than 200 miles since last year and I am met with this. All three warning lights were on.

I am taking it to an indy VAG garage, they looked after my old VW T4, so I know them. Fingers crossed.

I have to say the 2 mile drive home was a real hoot!

I had a similar fault in my E90 that had done minimal mileage between MOT’s due to lockdown and had no previous issues. As mentioned as a possible above it was the reluctor rings. With sitting for so long without use rust had formed behind them and pushed them slightly out of shape registering the fault. Got them both cleaned up, rings replaced and both ABS sensors at the same time and sure it was circa £200 including labour and VAT from my local garage.

Hope it’s something simple and cheap

It was not dissimilar to the amount what I paid for my ABS pump replacement. Nowadays you can have them refurbished for a few hundred.

I hope it's something simple, but if it is the ABS pump/motor ECU Testing will rebuild it for £170!

Good luck getting it fixed.

You mentioned three lights. There is plenty of info on here about the “trifecta”, although there are different trifectas. Let us know which lights are on and someone will point you in the right direction.

As a hope of some comfort - my daughters dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree recently. (VW Golf)
The auto hold brake system went off etc etc. I really thought it was a serious module fault but a garage with some proper diagnostic kit determined it was nothing more that a wheel sensor -

£40 - jobs all done and everything working again..

I hope you have the same result

If you do really need an ABS Pump then let me know as I do have one for a facelift Z4. They are different from pre facelift for info.

Thanks for that - its a 2008 facelift. I am away next week and the car is going in the following week. I'll pm you the outcome then. Thanks

Agree. Mine failed a few months ago. £500 for mine refurbished, refitted and brake fluid change at my Indy in Solihull.
