Mot failed brakes help

Front brakes failed Mot, halfords pads were available but on the box it says 318 320 etc and not high powered 3.0 z4?

Were can I get pads from and which ones and how hard are they to fit?

Just bought some auto tex? From my local garage part shops, says on box they are for z4! I have done brakes before but wondered if BMW's were more difficult, I'll look at the guide. Many thanks

Also if the brakes were low to fail an Mot, why didn't my sensors pick it up?

The pads might not have been low.
You may have just failed the brake efficancy test.
Do your discs look like they have been scored?

No they have a small lip but not scored at all, and it was only the left one that failed? I put new pads on now, shall i rebook and hope it passes?

Garage have failed mine before - saying needs new brake pads... So I changed them and took the old pads back with me, asked why they said they needed changing, when they didn't. The answer I got was "oh its difficult to see when there one the car, sorry" ... grrrr

So they may not be low enough to trigger the wear sensor, you'll see when you take them out... but suspect something similar.

They don't always wear straight though.

Replacement is about 15 minutes per wheel when I last did mine (including cleaning the inside of the wheel )

Why retest elsewhere? Most will simply test the fault again and pass it free (despite being allowed except in certain instances to charge)

As soon as the new station puts it on the system it will throw up the other stations fail and ring alarm bells as to why.

As an aside if you just fitted new pads expect them to take a few hundred miles to bed into used discs before they reach full efficiency.

with cj, go back to original test centre, otherwise a new centre will find something else

also i would let the brakes bed in before going back for a retest

Oh ok, the first station didn't even charge me anyway I felt it was unprofessional so I have gone to another to be sure, and I havnt lost any money anyway! I changed the brakes Sunday and booked in tomorrow, I keep braking though will this not be enough if doing 50 miles and some sharp braking?

Major dilemma I just rung the original teat centre told them I couldn't see a problem with the disk and pads but changed the pads anyway they said was te galilee stuck or uneven in anyway? The said they normally clean the calipers and test the pads straight away without bedding in and the test normally passes on the rolling road! Were they trying it on, is it worth taking back to them for them to find a problem that isn't there or shall I go somewhere else as I havnt paid any money anyway? Help!

Not sure how they can do an MOT and make no charge? Did they do the full test and fail it on the brakes? You should have received a fail notice, etc.

Frankly I'd just call them, see if it passed on everything else then take it in for the brakes. If they never did a test and you'd rather go elsewhere then just do that.

50 miles or so of braking will have best part bedded them in

They had the forms but I didn't take them away for some stupid reason and the fact I didn't pay! It was halfords autocentre and people have now told menthey are known for ripping people off!! They had a form for advisory on the rear bushes and failed the brake.


I have booked in to a guy I know but totally forgot! And I can watch him do the Mot tomorrow!

Ps how much are new bushes and are try easy to fit myself?

I would never take my car to a Halfords or Kwik fit place or anywhere similar that discounts as there is of course a tendency to do the test on the hope of getting work on any fail or advisory. Of course all do the MOT to the same standard, but I just feel they are looking for the work. Better a known and trusted local garage

Bushes are easy enough but you need jacks, stands, equipement, tools and a bit of mechanical savvy to diy them as there is bound to be something that's hard to undo, align, refit, etc.

Well I don't belove it! Watched an independent pass my car in 15 minutes! We checked the rear bushes perfectly fine!! Brakes were fine in fact everything underneath looked very good considering age!!

Lesson learnt, do not go to a brand named garage... Wnkers....

Unless you know it's a rare good one! But not something I'd be testing with my car. I prefer to support the small businesses anyway.

Glad it's all sorted though - that could have racked up a few pounds in extras
