Oh balls its failed. basically the garage said its on the brake lines being corroded in 3 separate places.
so he's quoting a 600+ due to the amount of work getting to them, is this reasonable as it seems a lot

does anyone know where near Leicester is reliable place to get this done as the garage cant do it next week due to holidays and I need the car to be on the road.

I doubt its something I can do myself as getting access under the car is a ball ache. although if its simply a case of removing trim and replacing pre made bought lines then I would do it if I could.

failed reasons:
"Reason(s) for failure:
Offside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c)

That seems very expensive to me!!

My friend had a back break line on an ST done last week for £100 inc VAT at a local garage to me.

That is a ridiculous price. Absolutely taking the pi**.
i do this job all the time on z4's. Including mine.
Worst case scenario £260.
I know I am in Chesterfield (J29/30 of M1), but only 50 mins to an hour from you.
Might save you 340 quid.

I got my brake pipes done last year by my indy and charged £400ish. I thought that was a lot, but apparently a bit of a bitch to fit - something about them threading up above the fuel tank or something I think he said (a bit of a mechanical retard me, so didn't have any basis to argue).

I have heard others mention that it's often only surface rust, so a good chance if you gave them a scrub with some wire wool and slap a bit of paint on them it may get through a retest without comment.

Like mentioned previously if there's any dirt they won't wipe away to inspect. They'll just put it down to corrosion.

Trip to Andy sounds like a good idea. Then best case Andy can revive them for you, worst case fit new pipes.
 
Fitting over the rear axle/suspension is tight but really no problem at all.
Can reuse all the old clips and look nice. Then sprayed down with anti -corrosion coating so it NEVER happens again!

As a matter of interest what spray coating do you use?

Its the one that stagecoach buses use to coat all their vehicles. Ill try and find a link to it. Used it that often I cant remember what its called!!
Will pop down to my workshop later and find out.
Good stuff but smelly!

yeah, i've just collected it and they said its just the labour. so i would have expected it to be a buy new ones from bmw and fit but they indicated they would be made to measure from a copper roll... seems a bit old school to me. I would have at least expected some sort of standardised part to be available.

Did mine for the price of a brake flaring kit a few ends, litre of fluid and a roll of tube. Probably worked out at £50 all-in. Rear is a pita, for anyone without a little creativity, but do-able. Garages ramp up the price as they claim a need to remove the fuel tank, but not required

Personally I would not waste time trying to clean and coat them. These cars at 10-15 years old and if they are rusted then replace as failure at high speeds not what you want

Totally agree if they are worn then I'll get it fixed. The car is 13 so probably worn enough.unfortunately I'm not in a position to do it myself so kind of happy to get it done by someone so don't mind. It's a shame as I kind of want to do it for the challenge... last yr was rebuilding my engine in another car. But I can't afford to have the car off the road
 
My 52 plate E46 Compact had an advisory for surface corrosion on the rear brake pipes when MOT'd just before I bought it in 2014 (but not in 2015 or 2016)? :lol:

My BMW indy said OEM pipes go over the top of the fuel tank, so it needs to be lowered (not removed) to replace them. Maybe the OP was quoted based on making pipes up as you don't then need to route them over the tank!

Sorted mine in April when I swapped the winter wheels back to summers with a wire brush, emery cloth and a tin of Hammerite for £6.99!

But if severely corroded a trip to Andy looks like the answer!
 
off to see andy tm... going to the shop to buy biscuits now! :D

looking forward to it, never done anything with brake lines before other than in my westy where i had to simply bend them to the right shape. new experience with someone who knows is always worth it.

Insane price, mine failed on the same a couple of years back

the local BMW dealer quoted £1300, minimum 12hrs labour , excuse being they need to remove the petrol tank for access as the lines run over the top, it's less awkward on ours to access than an e46 apparently at least.

Obviously told the dealer to wise up , went to the local independent left it off at 9am, got a call at lunchtime to pick it up. took 3hrs and cost £140...
it's apparently easy done
