Mot fail update

I have now discovered the problem. The side light doesn't work, instead the indicator bulb lights up solid. Any ideas ?

Yes, your side light bulb has gone! On a serious note, I'm sure I've read somewhere that when the car's CAN-BUS senses a blown bulb, it lights up a nearest alternative. Apologies in advance if this is complete nonsense but definitely check out the side light bulb.

As above just need to replace the sidelight bulb, brace your self if you buy it from the stealers as there £40+, can buy them online and reuse the holder for less the £5

?? they are normal sidelight bulbs that are less than a pound from a motor shop. And it is very easy to change yourself

The facelift cars with xenons uses a different type of sidelight bulb, the bulbs not expensive. The only problem is that its supplied with a holder and the bayonet pins stop the bulb from coming out. The other problem I had was finding one the correct voltage to stop the car thinking it was broken.

So if you have halogen lights it's a standard 501 bulb because you have normal side lights ; with xenons it is an 'angel eye', which is indeed a different bulb. Both require getting in the wheel arch and removing the back of the light unit. Easy, but scraped knuckle city

Take an evening to familiarize yourself with the light unit, and have a go at DIY. Might take a while, but as you say, saves dealer costs (or Indy costs for that matter)
