MOT Extensions

Chatting to an MOT tester yesterday and a few points to be aware of with the 6 month extensions

Not all cars have been given an extension so check before you are caught out.

Some people that have had the MOT done anyway have lost the 2 or 3 weeks you normally get to test early and keep the renewal date.

You still need more than a month of MOT to buy car/road tax

This is all random with no rhyme nor reason

Interesting comments.

I had my Zed done just before it came in. Both the Mx5's are due soon though. I was going to get Edd's done as we may sell it over the summer, but was hoping to take advantage of the scheme and leave MrsG's a few months to spread them out and line it up with a service date.

Just been on the phone to the Welsh and they're waiting to hear if there'll be an extension. Until they know they won't be updating the system to show if there's an extension or not.

We could be in the position that MOT's will be required in Scotland and Wales but the garages only being open in England. It's all down to Westminster and the clown show in charge at the moment.

Going by recent decisions these idiots have made... Ferry company without ferries, tracing app, care home statistics in England not being reported properly, PPE not being ordered when the health secretary owns a PPE company, Dyson and his ventilators etc, etc, etc. I have zero confidence in their ability to sort this out.

Utter farce as usual but don't forget to fucking clap as that'll help.

   Thank you OP, for highlighting this issue to give us all a chance to avoid being caught out. It is much appreciated.

   Good to see it only took 3 posts to become yet another repetition of political ranting.

So you have faith in the organised crime syndicate operating as government?

My comment was completely apolitical, which is what this thread was until you added your perennial cut'n'paste.

Can we get back to the thread guys. I don't no why you feel in necessary to make yourself look a plonker Skelters. I may do it myself sometimes, by accident or through lack of knowledge, but your taking the biscuit with these rants sir. (enough said by me)

I had one stored under a cover expiring on 13/05 someone local randomly chapped my door around the start of the month and asked if I’d sell it to them so I checked the MOT status re the extension.

At that point it still showed expiring 13/05/20 and couldn’t be taxed when I tested online so had to contact the guy to say that as he was wanting to use it as soon as he bought it. But then within a few days the extension automatically went on to 13/11 /2-0 without me doing anything and could then be taxed online

It’s bizarre if that’s not applicable across the board!!!

I did read that they would only extend it as it expired, so maybe that is having a delay effect?

As you say, no rhyme or reason. I wonder how many will get caught out thinking it’s automatic. I wouldn’t have bothered checking mine at the time if I hadn’t had the chap on the door

One of the cars does not have an MOT yet as it is not 3 years old until the end of the month, but the MOT checker just shows nothing under the MOT header.

Wonder if that goes up to November ...

Must get the end of warranty service done somehow though :o

my motorbike is due in 2 weeks, website still says it expires then.. no idea whether it has to go in or not, is there not some info on the gov website.. im off to check :o

Think it will get extended as it gets within 7 days , that was the case this week with my work car .

It would be better if it gave you more notice than 7 days notice, most people would be trying to find somewhere to get it done before this time.

super, thanks for that Andy

My car was due an MOT by 24 May but because I wanted to keep a continuous record I got it tested on 19 May.

It passed but when I got home I noticed the certificate had an expiry date of 18 May 2021 not 24 May 2021. :?

Having had a similar issue before I e-mailed the DVLA and they explained that because of the extension it wasn't officially due until 24 November 2020, but they sent me a revised certificate expiring on 24 May 2021.

So it seems a bit of a mess just now - if you get one done check the dates!

And while the extension won't cause problems with ANPR cameras, etc. a mate of mine in the motor trade has heard stories of insurers not being keen to accept claims involving cars on the 6 month extension so I'd recommend getting your car tested if you can.

Just checked mine as this thread made me scared...

Automatically extended until 21 October - few. Not so sure I will wait until then though.
