MOT expiry - Renew or not?

My MOT is due to expire on the 24th.

Given that we have a 6 month extension would you renew for the sake of a continuous history, or make the most of the 6 months?

I'm sure it has no issues after Ross did the Inspection 2 last month, but in years to come might the gap be an issue if I ever have to sell because I'm too decrepit to drive it.

TIA.

Wouldn’t worry about the gap. These cars are SORN’d without MOT all the time and it’s usually because their owners care too much about them rather than too little. :)

I would not worry about the gap either. However bare i mind when the 6 month amnesty is up there will be a back log, so may be worth getting it done any way. After today's announcement by Borris I would think there will be a few MoT centres opening again. Where I got mine tested 2 days before lock down they are currently closed.

Just be sure to disinfect your car thoroughly each time someone else touches it.

There shouldn't be a backlog - all MOTs for the next year have been delayed by 6 months, its not like everyones expires at once.

Make the most of the gap.

The car passing with no advisories will have more meaning from a resale standpoint than the fact it was MOT’d 6 months ‘late’ due to COVID-19.

I was told that despite the government's decision to provide an extension the insurance is not valid if the MOT has expired :?

I think the point is it hasn't expired it has been extended and officially so. I think the insurance companies might have a vested interest in suggesting otherwise but I think they would be on a sticky wicket if they ignored the fact that a car had a legal MOT.

Got to say this suits me down to the ground given I can now phase my MOT in with my current cars annual service. I've yet to have a car fail an MOT whhen it is serviced on the same day :-)

Like others, I wouldn't worry about it and perhaps even take advantage of getting the MOT done at a time that suits you for future years too.

The main thing is that you should be keeping the car in a roadworthy condition (this is relevant to insurance companies too). Your miles will be important here.

If doing lots of miles a year I would be inclined to get it tested sooner. But if you're only doing a few thousand a year then there's much less chance of anything changing since the last test.

In other words, whether it's your high mileage daily driver or your low mileage weekender, use common sense and proceed accordingly.

Mine has expired, when things settle i'll get another MOT on the car. I think to be honest, explaining a missing MOT in years to come (given COVID-19) won't be a deal breaker. I'm fairly sure some cars will have been due services and they have been delayed for a few months.

I checked one on a car I’ve got Sorn’d that’s due to expire 13/05/20 to see if I had to do anything. Using the .gov mot checking site it came up with the details showing MOT expiry 13 November 2020. No mention about being expired or extended - just a valid until date.

As above I wouldn’t worry. I managed to get my daily motd last week though easily booked for the following day.

Thanks for all the replies.

So it shouldn't be a big issue, although it is still showing on the DVLA website as expiring on 24 May 2020. :?

I may just see if I can get it done anyway!

Think mine was still showing the original date about a week/10 days ago
