MOT... does this sound right?

My 04 has just failed it's MOT at North East Tyre & Autocare.

I have never had an MOT there that hasn't failed (one of these loss leader places I think)

Anyway, they claim:

The brake pipes need replacing : £100 per side
Front-Rear brake pipes nee replacing: £60 per side
Both rear springs need replacing: £145 per side

OF course the springs have gone (no surprise there), but what about the prices?

Can't comment on the prices etc. but if you want a second opinion then Cramag in Yeadon have always been great with us.

Feel free to pop in for a coffee whilst they're working on it !

Cheers, used them before but they are a bit of a drive from here... going to get a 2nd opinion at my local garage first I think, seems like it's all simple stuff to do, just the prices I wonder about, as well as whether it actually needs doing or if they are trying it on.

Arent the rear springs like £80 a side?

So they are charging £65 to change a rear which takes 30 mins? ... thats £130ph... which is what i would expect from a main stealer.

Euro car parts do then for £55 each...

def get a second opinion then.

There is a cheapo outfit here... speedy tyres.. advertising £19.99 MOT's however if your car fails and you drive off without getting it fixed by them - there and then, then you have to pay again for the retest. And no surprise they have inflated labour charges :headbang:

Based on the rear springs, I'd say they're charging a little too much on the labour - although they do have to do the job properly - whereas I'd push down on the rear wishbone to get the spring out, they have to disconnect everything so it drops freely.

Have they given you the Plus 4 discount on the work?

With Cooper Reading I used to get a quote from an indi to do the work and they'd get close to matching that - especially if they had the car in their posession. Sometimes all it took was me telling them not to start the work as I was getting quotes from elsewhere.

Perhaps it's just a bit of surface corrosion and you can rectify yourself as in the above thread? :idunno:

Is it worth having it main dealer MOT'd as a 2nd opinion as they will, hopefully, know the product better than an independent testing station? At least if they concur you will have peace of mind.

Local bus depot or MOT only place would be best for 2nd opinion as they have no interest in failing the car.

mmm, good idea, will have a look at that over the weekend and see if I can do the same... no idea where all these pipes are though (guess I'll have to learn to use the forum search function, LOL)

Looks like Euro car parts do a Sachs Coil Spring (Rear) (Part No.: 627112790) for £67 (vs standard one at £55)

What do people recommend to replace broken BMW springs? I was going to go down the Eibach route previously but I am looking to swap the car next year and could do without the extra labour charge swapping all 4 over now.
I also see Suplex springs on ebay for quite cheap... never heard of them thoguh
