MOT deferral

Vehicles requiring MOT,s after 31 March have been extended by 6 months.

Mine was due 28 September so by my reckoning it’s not now due till March 2021. Am I right in assuming that MOT will be valid for 12 months and become due every March now or only 6months reverting back to the September date? Now garages are open has this scheme been scrapped as the Government website still shows my car MOT date as this September

Yes, once it expires and you get a new MOT, that will be valid for 12 months again (from March).

No idea when they stop moving the 6 months though, but that is £27 in my pocket and not spent on a useless test.

The date is only moved on; on the day (or days after) the test was due.

Now more garages are open you may find that the Gov. does stop rolling the test date on and your September date stands.

Just when I was thinking we were getting close to the European system of MOTs every other year :D

Anyway, so far, 4 cars have saved £27 each

Hopefully before the new test dates and before we finally leave the EU we do adopt that or even scrap MOT altogether and put the onus on the vehicle owner to keep the car in a roadway condition with just spot checks to ensure it

Yes, it is a massive con. Only those with vested interests are keen on them.
One of the garages opened again for services, and they called me for my service - fine, but then wanted to do the MOT as well. Uh, not due until December thanks. They were really pushing for that unnecessary expense.

HGV’s also had an extension, this seems to have stopped (received an email today) now for vehicles needing a test from August onwards.

On that basis I’d expect cars to be changed soon so if your MOT is due Aug/Sept you might have to get it renewed. With a proper test.

I had my X6 MOTd on Monday while being serviced. It wasnt due till the 30th.
From what I could gather they only forward the MOT date 2 weeks before its due and I didnt want to wait that close in case I struggled to get the car in for the service and MOT after this.
If I had waited and booked it now the MOT may have moved to December. I would rather have it due at this time of year.

On the other hand, my car will be sorned in December so I can move the mot to when I in sorn it, March or April time so in practical terms a year extension

I’m the same won’t have an mot for 2 years

My 335 has an MOT due 29th June - this will be rolled on and Im happy with that. However, it also requires a brake fluid change says the iDrive display and as I have the extended warranty to pay for this month, the T&C's only allow for a three month extension of the service requirements.

Therefore I'm only going to benefit by a max of three months or loose the option of the BMW extended warranty.

Why Ron? The mot can just be done in December by itself? I still get the servicing done just not the mot

My M was due a test on 24 May, but as my usual test centre was open I got it done anyway (it passed with no advisories).

Partly to maintain continuous history, and also to avoid having any problem getting one done once the extensions stop as there will be twice as many people wanting one - the ones that were expiring anyway plus all the expiring extensions!

I hear what you say but it means another day of trailing off to the garage. They will do a collect an delivery for me at this time.

I had my Abarth MOT'd yesterday and it failed. It was on a thing I knew needed doing (CV boot) but had forgotten about, am getting it sorted next week. So the MOT has kicked my arse into sorting the car, can only be a good thing.

But a normal service would have picked that up? Abarth needs an annual service anyway (since when have you got one ???)

Worried he’s bringing their values down?

Can you imagine the state of vehicles on the road if they make the MOT every 2 years instead?

It's bad enough already with the great unwashed driving around on bald tyres, snapped springs and blown bulbs. Spot checks is a nice idea but the police would complain about having to do some actual work and the public would complain about the police not catching criminals and instead hounding them for driving a shitheap!

It works fine in Europe, I don’t panic so much about those things. Not seeing a downside really
