MOT day.... well chuffed

Had the first MOT on the 30i today under my ownership. Passed with flying colours, no advisories, tester said it was “spotless”. I am well pleased given its age and the fact it’s never been garaged (to my knowledgeable) she seems to be in very good shape 👍.

Interestingly(ish) as it rolled into the testing bay it clicked on to exactly 63,000 miles.

Had mine mot'd at Halfords on Friday and it too passed with no problem.
While collecting it I asked if when they service cars do they add the details to the manufacturer database and they apparently do.
They usually wait till they have several cars to enter as they get charged the same amount for one car as they do for multiple cars.
I prefer to service myself but it might be worth having them do the basics and reset the service indicator and add the details to the bmw database

Excellent result

Did you fix the headlight washers or did they not pick up on them?

My 3 series went in today and passed with a couple of advisories on rear tyres at 3mm which I knew about.

Also had an MOT on mine today, it did not pass with flying colours  . 6 Fails  . 4 of those on headlights and 2 on handbrake.

I took my daughters car into my usual place for an MOT a couple of weeks ago, I asked while I was there if they would fail mine on headlamp washers. The guy said no, as long as the screen washers were working it would be fine.

However, it stopped raining for 10 mins at the weekend so I went out with a view to checking fuses etc to see if I could get it working anyway. I started the car, put the lights on, pulled the lever and both the windscreen and headlamps got sprayed (much to my surprise). No idea why I couldn’t get it to work before, but I have noticed it work whilst driving a couple of times since.... so it seems somehow to have fixed itself. It probably realised that fixing itself was easier than watching me fumble about with a screwdriver and spanner 🤓.

The headlight washers only work when the lights are on, and even then I don't think they operate every time you use the screen-washers - just every 5th/6th time you use them.

Still if they fixed themselves that's a great result!

Yep headlight washers do not come on every time, it comes on every 4th or 5th cycle and only when headlights are switched on.

Being here in the states I find it interesting to read all the post about your MOT's. What passed / Failed what is tested etc. In the US each state has their own rules of what they inspect. Some just inspect emission's , other's check, tires, brakes, e-brake, lights, signals, wipers, horn, suspension, and some even the amount of rust on the car too much rust and you fail. I personally like the states that also don't require a front tag. Makes any car look cleaner in my opinion. And some inspections are even every 2 years depending on state and year of car.

Out of interest- which state is the most lenient in terms of inspection?

Based on my limited knowledge as have not lived in all 50 states. I would have to say Georgia as they only check emissions each year (unless it is 3 yrs or newer) and if car i think is 1993 or older it doesn't need a emissions test. Bonus no front tag needed. But alas I don't live there anymore forced to move to Missouri front tag needed. I do know that in the state of Pennsylvania body rust is checked and if over ?? percent you fail. So either have to get repaired or junk the car.
