MOT advisory

Had the Abarth for the first MOT and had an advisory on the front tyres.

"Worn to 4 mm"

Why is that an advisory???? 4 mm in my book is quite a way off from the 1.6 minimum.

uh ... yes

It was the Abarth dealer in Bing country and funny enough they were advising new tyres to someone sitting at the other desk as well who seemed to have been taken in by it (women seems to be more easily persuaded as my wife asked if I changed the tyres as they must have been dangerous then). :D

Mugs like me who forgot to ask how much the MOT was as part of the service and got whacked with the £58 one. Idiot (me). :x

The Polo first MOT was the day before and that was at least the reduced £30 as part of a service.

Council Garage for me every time. No financial incentive to fail or advise anything. And as they're Local Gov, they're hardly motivated and pernickety.

Might be a problem if they've been rolling round in "Bin lorry Juice" fixing a hydraulic ram or something, and then don't change their overalls, so always book first slot of the day.

it's full price, but IMO worth it.
Every Local council has to run one I believe.

That's too true. My wife's reaction would be to get on and buy new tyres as clearly they are dangerous and I shouldn't try to save on life threatening issues.
Seems after 30 years of marriage the word of any random salesman, advisor, etc. etc. is more valid than mine

They are chancing it as you have deduced...They are probably using manufacturers guide lines recommending changes at 4mm, considering 8mm is new they say half worn degrades grip in the wet.

I'm tight so will be waiting for 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the tyre as my Z seems to wear the inner shoulders more, even with the alignment done! Fronts at the mo are almost devoid of tread for the first 2cm inside and sit at 3.5 the rest of the way. They need changing but maybe Feb.. :(

How many miles have you done to get them down to 4mm and how many miles will you do pre next MOT ? They are probably covering their backsides. (as well as a possible tyre sale)

Seems too far away to be an advisory...I always go down to the wear indicators on the tyres generally before I change them but at Audi/bmw they always recommend you should change them at 3mm.

They are summer tyres (P zero nero) and the car has only done 8k miles. So if that is 3 years to get to the half way mark, I think it would be a safe assumption that in 2 years time I would be looking at replacing them ...

It reminded me a little of my leaking exhaust warning on an MOT 15 years ago on the Golf. So 15 years later, it has never appeared on an MOT advisory again ...

My daughter's Corsa was the same, She was told by the main dealer that the brake pads were "Very close" but the following two services they were never mentioned. Bandits! :x

Don't blame the tester. Blame VOSA. It's his discretion. If the VOSA advise was " tyres worn below 3 mm it would be a lot clearer for all.
