I just found this forum this week and thought I better say hello.

I bought my 3.0 Z4 Roadster last week, picking him up on the Wednesday evening.

I'm coming from a VW background, and moving most recently from my much loved and cherished Corrado VR6 that I've owned for many years (it'll be 7 years in 2 weeks!) :(

So far the Z4 has really impressed me, and I am sure I have made the right choice, even if I should have maybe held on a little longer to find one with more options, I've been reading up on the Intravee iPod install and Bluetooth for a BMW Business Headunit (without Sat Nav or MFSW controls), I traded the options for the hard top that came supplied and the red leather I became infatuated with when test driving. Is it possible to retro fit a steering wheel with controls?

Anyways, some pics (all stolen from the auto-trader ad I bought it from ;)):

Things to do include the above mentioned iPod install, new wheels+tyres (getting rid of the dreaded run-flats), removing the amber from the indicators and repeaters, and some debadging, I want to get a nice smoothed finish to the car.

Cheers for looking, this seems like a very friendly and informative forum, much as I have become used to in the dub scene.

Cheers again,

Great car and welcome. You can rerofit the steering wheel controls on your current steering wheel. Follow the link which will take you to the OEM website for all Zed parts.

beautiful, already this forum is paying off! ;)

cheers for the very quick reply and information

IWelcome...is the wind deflector hidden under the bootlid? Nice looking car, the Hardtops are growing on me.

ummmz no, should it be?

The hardtop looks a lot better in the flesh than it does in photos, the guy I bought the car from actually prefered it with the hardtop on.

Welcome
The hardtops look the nuts dont they :D Wish i had one. You can fit a multi function wheel no probs, as you can the newer fatter wheels if you choose.

Cheers for the welcomes :)

Interesting idea about the different wheel, that would be neater and cleaner option. Would the connections be prewired in the column like the Cruise Control?

Is there just one other design or are all BMW wheels interchangeable to an extent?

I've read up about the Cruise Control and that's definitely something I'll be doing too :)

Cruise control is via a stalk which slots into the steering column - not part of the MFSW....

If the car you are buying was built before October 2004 the wiring harness for the cruise will be present just waiting for the switch

The car was built in Feb 2004 so I should be fine regarding the Cruise Control, I'll obviously take the trim off and check for the wires before ordering though..

What I actually meant was if the harness for the Multi Function Steering Wheel was prewired so it would be a straight plug and play, or would I need additional wiring to connect into the main harness? I think the new steering wheel is a better/neater idea but again I'd need the harness in place.

Great car BTW - almost identical to mine when I got it. Sterling grey 3.0i with hardtop, red interior (retrofit) and ellipsoids.

Let me see if I can help on the MFSW and cruise. Firstly your model is prewired for cruise. Buy only the switch for £75 and cut out the lower cowl yourself and save £75. The harness is tucked up under the column. There's a lot of info on the site already.

Next the MFSW. On your age of car you are almost certain to need the supplemental harness. After that it's a plug and play change and can be used to control the audio, sat nav, phone, etc. depending on what's fitted.

Take a look here as I did this 18months back and went MFSW and paddle shifts on the steptronic.

Hi, Welcome to the forum!

nice car. if your getting rid of your wheels pm me with some details.

i fitted the cruise control as mentioned earlier. really easy. i just got a switch and cut the cowl with a dremmel. all in it took about half an hour and looks great.

Good info there cj10jeeper, very nice job fitting the flappy paddles too! 8)

So it looks like I'll be buying the Cruise Control stalk and retrofitting the MFSW controls (via the additional harness), I'll ring the dealer for a price.

Rudd_2002, I won't be getting rid of the wheels too quickly, but I'll give you a shout when I do (hopefully early next year) :)

The thot plickens as they say.

My local dealer (North Oxford BMW) quoted £145 inc for the parts which I went ahead on. He was adamant no additional wiring was required to fit the kit (he checked the fitting instructions twice) but he is sure I will need the car reprogramming to accept the part, they checked with the service tech and that will require 1.5 hours (?!?!!?) work, so £152, £7 more than the part itself.

An hour and half seems madness?

I went ahead with the order and will see what happens when I come to fit it.

that coding for the steering or the cruise?

cruise definately doesnt need coding and took me just 10 minutes to fit...

for the MFSW, cj10jeeper doesn't mention it in his write-up and seems to imply adding the controls are plug and play.

I haven't ordered the Cruise Control yet, I need to give my bank account a rest

No programming or coding, required for either the MFSW or cruise control. All plug and play

Several members ahve fitted both and it's never been required.

In terms of parts just order the switch not the cruise kit inc. cowling. It's a 10 minutes job with a dremmel and less than 5 mins to fit it.

That would have been £150 down the pan then, thanks again for the information :)

I'll just buy the switch and cut the cowling when I go for the Cruse Control, I know the sharp end of a dremel
