More warning lights 🙈

Hi fellow Z4,ers

Had my 2008 2.0 since last year and have recently had the emissions light come on and stay on , all a bit of a pain as it has sat in my garage for nearly 3 months now and only used infrequently and started at least once a week and left for about 10 mins ticking over . Anyone out there able to suggest what the problem might be ? And a possible cure ? Also has lost some of the pixels on stereo and binnacle facias 😩 .

Many thanks in advance

Peter

Hi Peter. No way of knowing unless you get a code reader on the car. If you let us know where you are, maybe a local member can help you out, otherwise code readers are not expensive to buy. The BMW specific Creator 310+ is around £50 with no subscription to pay.

Hi Zedebee,
Big thanks for getting back to me 👍 I’m situated near Sturminster Newton, Dorset and would like to hear from anyone nearby that might be on the thread ?? I do plan to sell it on once the hood weather arrives ?? Just want it to be free from problems for the next ownership 👍
Many thanks

Staerting a car up and just leaving it ticking over for 10 minutes does more harm than good tbh. Condensation doesn't get time to burn off properly; cats don't get up to full temperature etc.
Definitely read the codes first, but then take it out for a bloody good thrash over 20-30 miles and you may find it all resets.

Just have a look at the manifold that it isnt cracked......this can in turn throw an emmisons light..
on the N46 2 litre it is v v v common.

Thanks guys 👍 I’ve given it a good run with no change unfortunately. I will check out the manifold 👀 anyone know why I’ve lost some of the pixels???
Thanks again

The light won't go out on it's own once set. So you need to check the code and see if it will reset using the code reader.

The pixels sometimes fall into the footwell, have you looked?
(Ok, sorry, seriously now.........................)

Two separate issues really. Radio should be an easy swap for another one.

@Umfaan had a similar issue with the pixels on the instruments and I believe found a way to sort them out? Something to do with a dirty connector inside the cluster.
If that doesn't fix it, then you need to replace the cluster. It holds all the car info and cannot simply be swapped in without causing issues.
@bigwinn has successfully swapped the chip from the original to a replacement cluster, so worth asking him about that.

2.0l cars are known for getting cracked manifolds, had mine cracked around one of the downpipes welds, could hear it on starting up but as it heated up it sealed itself. No engine light but depends how bad the crack is as air getting in will mess up the exhaust sensors and cause engine light to come on. Changed mine out with a good used replacement and will be having the cracked one welded up and keep as a spare. Used replacements are not cheap.
