Have we seen these before, didn't think so?

Amidst all the excitement over the BMW GINA Concept's fabric body skin, many automotive publications overlooked the fact that the car shares a number of design cues with the next-generation Z4. The GINA is not a direct preview of the Z4, but a few items — like the character line running from the front of the hood to the rear of the car — will make it to production. Based on recent revealing spy photos and what we've learned from GINA, our artist has put together illustrations of how the 2010 Z4 will probably look.

Many of the polarizing features of the current Z4's design have been toned-down, for what appears to be a much more elegant look.

Chris Bangle's fussy flame-surfacing seems less controversial, as the side character lines appear to have a more logical flow throughout the Z4's surface development. The Z4's twin-kidney grille takes inspiration from BMW's CS concept, as well as the new 7-series, while a strong chin spoiler anchors the front fascia nicely. The rear styling shows that the current Z4's Quasimodo hump is gone. In its place is a rear deck that resembles the 6-series a bit — only much more pleasantly resolved.

Prototypes spotted sport the retractable hard top, although new reports out of Germany tell us buyers will also be given the opportunity to choose a soft-top option.

Since the new Z4 rides on the same platform as the 3-Series, look for the Z4's engine lineup to mirror the 3's. A high-performance Z4 M will once again be offered and, for the first time, it is believed that BMW will offer a diesel-powered Z4.

BMW's radical design revolution hasn't always been aesthetically successful, at least in the eyes of the BMW faithful. But BMW styling now seems to be hitting its stride, recapturing some of its former pleasing proportions. It appears that the steadying hand of BMW designer Adrian van Hooydonk is getting the beloved Bimmers back where they need to be.

As we have reported before, the Z4's production will shift from the U.S. to Germany when the new model bows.

Least we can get the newer engines such as the m3 v8 the 3.0 twin turbo.

That said i'd be very happy with the latest 3.0 out of the latest 330 with efficient dynamics, has 270 odd hp and even better emissions. Expect that would be a nice drive in the current z4, the z4m engine seems to weigh the nose down a bit.

Boot space is OK, the SLK is only 15% less than the Z4, that's acceptable to me in exchange for the benefits of having the hard roof. It hasn't been a problem for me, even on long journeys. The Z4 is pretty impractical anway, so losing 15% of not much is OK.

Have you seen the boot space in the 3 series though, its completely laughable.

not bad if all your luggage is 6" high.

I wouldn't even consider a V8 engined Z4, not with current fuel costs etc there is virtually no market for such a car. A 3.0 twin turbo rated at 306-325bhp sounds pretty awesome though. I'm certain there will be a diesel option this time too. Maybe a Z4 with the 335d engine would be a good car :scratchhead:

Too many sharp edges and the headlights are spread too far apart - make me think Mercedes. Pretty car though, but I like mine better :P

Not seen it, but if it's anything like mine, the size is OK, just the aperature gets really small, so you need to put the roof up to get anything large out. It is a minor inconvenience, a hard top is definitely more hassle, but like I say it has it's benefits too.

For me, this sounds a bit daft, but one of my cats always used to sleep on the roof of my Z4 and it always looked furry, you get fed up cleaning it all the time. And then getting down he used to scratch the car too. Now, he rarely goes onto the SLK roof. It's better when you clean it too, you get crease/fold marks on a soft top, never liked that.

Edit - OK seen it now - yes, that is ridiculous, don't worry - it won't be like that, remember the 3 series is a huge roof 'cos it's a 4 seater.

Updated with piccy of 3 series above, I was rather shocked when I saw one at the show room since the normal 3 series boot is huge.

My cats are fine... it's the neighbours cat that likes my roof! Not noticed any scratches though :)

Interesting. A cat would only sleep on the roof of my car ONCE.....:guns:
