More ///M Badges

I am a bit confused here. I would like to buy an M-tech steering wheel as everybody says they are great and to be quite honest they are as I have had a drive of a Z4 with one fitted and it is great. But my car is not an M so does that mean that if I buy one anf fit it its going to look stupid as that has an M badge on it? or can I get one without the badge?

Guys don't get too tetchy! I think they are mainly on about when people specifically go out to buy an M badge to stick on say a 318 that is clearly not one. My 3.0si Coupe come's from the factory with M steering wheel etc. but we are moaning at when people stick M badges on to make people think they have an M to make themselves look 'good' when they just look like twats.

The biggest culprits for sticking 'M' badges on cars that are not strictly 'M's are BMW. They stick them on wheels, steering wheels, sill plates- you can even buy an 'M' watch,it makes the time go faster :) Anything to make more money!

It's a bit of badge snobbery I suppose, but really just a bit of fun. My mate has a 335i convertible M sport and I kid him about the steering wheel not being a proper 'M' wheel cos it hasn't the tricolour stitching. :D

Followed a 325i today - private plate and it had an M badge, i was just about to pull a face and realised, someone mentioned that BMW are kicking out some of their newer models complete with M badges and it was a very nice new car. These must have been the factory fitted, not quite sure why BMW are doing this.

It is not just people with M badges, it is anyone that sticks something on the back of their car that makes it out to be something it is not. Saw a nissan micra which was hand sprayed with what looked like hammer finish hammerite with an RS Turbo badge on the M5, could not get to my phone to take a pic. :o

How do we feel about people altering the style of their vehicle with lets say M style bodywork?

That's OK as long as there's no exterior badges. Someone who spends huge sums making a 320 looks like and M3 when they could just have bought an M3 is worthy or total chav respect. Without people so stupid, we wouldn't have the Jeremy Kyle show and without him, my wife's morning TV would not be complete.

M steering wheels are great, get one. It's sticky on M badges from Ebay that we don't like - see Lucy's post for details!

First thing I did.. took my /M badges off my MR. If you don't know what it is, I don't want you to.

However - I have these offending badges upstairs, and I'm tempted to put them on my black 406 HDi now, just to rile you lot :D

I have an ///M badge in my car - on the ZHP gearknob - but you cant buy it without over here :( only a small one mind...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but here in the states I've never seen an "M Sport" anything. It's either an M or not. Not saying it doesn't exist...I've just never seen it.

Have checked the US site and your quite right - unfortunately you don't get the M Sport range. Check the UK site and you will see the M Sport models (but not in all ranges). Link below should take you to the UK site if not just Google BMW UK and search the UK site and you will see that it does indeed exist here 'over the pond'.

While living in Germany I remember seeing 318ti and 3er coupe with M badges. I'm pretty sure there was an M appearance package available from the factory as an option (remember seeing it in a German BMW sales brochure). I may very well be mistaken but I thought there was a similar M package for the US market on the E39 4.0 models (as shown in the first photo).

Like the most here I don't agree with having M badges on a non M car unless factory fitted as a package described above. But if you think about it only enthusiast know or care what the M badge stands for. Most of the public wouldn't be able to differentiate between a 2.0 Z4 and the M Roadster, to these, all models of the Z4 look fast and fun.

My Z4 only has 4 M badges (1 on the steering wheel, 2 on door sill finishers, and 1 on the carbon fibre keyring :) ).

Great idea Andy, my missus has a 116i sport and i have my 3 removed M badges too. I feel a plot hatching............

Carbon fibre 'M' keyring!!! :o Now you have gone too far! :)

My old 523i Sport used to have 10 ///M badges, 1 on steering wheel, 1 on gear knob, 4 on door sill finishers, and 4 on wheels. They were all standard on Sport model. I did not add them on. :)

I have just bought a new 325i M Sport Coupe with M badges on it as standard so what do you want me to do - take them off because its not a M3? I wonder how many people have de badged their 2L, 2.2L and 2.5L Zeds - not perhaps because it gives cleaner lines etc but because they want people to think it's a 3.0L - surely not! Let people enjoy their lives and if a sticky M badge makes them feel good then hey ho - there's worse going on in the world!

I'd like to see the M badges that come standard on these cars. To me a badge is the big ///M that is either on the side or rear of the car. If by badges you mean the little M on the steering wheel or wheels, I never considered those to be badges.

I think the North American cars with the"SPORT PACKAGE" are the equivalent to the "M SPORT" of Europe. Smart marketing for the European market. :D The sport package usually includes a sportier suspension setup, seats, wheels and sometimes steering wheel, which often carry the ///M logo, but still no exterior badges. To get the real M suspension, steering, brakes and engine, you have to get an M car.
