After having to abort the planned Moffat meet in favour of earning some money to fund my Z4-itis, there is the possiblity of relaunching it to take place over Christmas / New Year if there is enough interest.

Following some comments that Route 1 may be too long I shortened slightly to Route 2. Then following some comments from Muppet in the original Moffat run thread that one of the roads maybe unsuitable (though on Google Earth it looks narrow it doesn't look unusable) I have come up with Route 3. The only problem with all 3 routes is actually finding somewhere for lunch that fits timewise, though there is tea shop at the Marrbery Smokehouse I would need to check whether it is open or we could find a pub in Newton Stewart.

Obviously with the time of year daylight is at a premium so if this is to happen then I think we should be looking at leaving Moffat no later than 09:00, thoughts please.
Also Cream O Galloway is shut so no Ice cream :headbang:

Does anyone interested have any preference for dates, I should be back in the UK on the 23rd December and hopefully not back to work before 9th January, we have some prior commitments over the festive period so with that in mind I'm thinking of either the 2nd or 3rd January.

I also reserve the right to bail out at Dumfries rather than return to Moffat just to double back on myself :D

Bit of a trek for me - coming from Angus. An overnight stop opportunity me thinks :D

Weather could fowl it all up? I'll keep an eye on it nearer the time.

I'm not fussed about dates, so just whatever suits most for attendance?

I'm in for now

Weather permitting We are in, Could opt for the picnic option for lunch. Would def be an overnighter for us

Weather permitting I'm in. While I understand the need for an early get away 9am from Moffat seems very early (Google puts that as a 1.5hr drive for me to get there). I've been lucky so far that every run has started either in Stirling (where I live) or in Livi (not really long-haul from here).

Sun-rise and Sunset for Christmas day (ish) in Glasgow are 8.47 and 15:47 and the route is going to be about 4 hours not including food stops. Would a 9.30 or 10am Moffat departure be too late? (therefore arriving back at Moffat 14:00 to 15:00ish)

ETA - Been reading stuff recently saying a white Christmas is actually highly likely in Scotland this year. It might scupper plans!

We would be up for this but it's likely the dates won't suit as we're off for some (hopeful) sun & mountain biking in Canaries on Xmas day for a week (not being huge Xmas fans here). If the dates fall outwith this period though and weather OK then we'll be there.

Come on CJ Eds - it's not that early - some of the meets down south start 6am ish ! but it's a fair point if there's sufficient daylight to start a little later - my own thought would be to start as early, increasing the chance of daylight and sunlight.

Like ZermattV if weather really poor (as I don't put winter tyres on the zed) we might turn up in a Quattro - I know, I know the horror of it. . . . .

CJ Eds you raise a valid point about the proposed early start but my thinking was if Bing / Autoroute etc are saying 4 hrs of driving then the reality could be a bit longer, throw in some photo stops and lunch and you could easily be looking at 5 - 6hrs driving time, which if we leave Moffat 09:00 gets us back between 2 - 3pm which in my eyes maximises the available daylight hrs to use for the actual drive.

Moffat is not exactly on my doorstep either but I appreciate my 45 mins is closer than most people.

I did mean to mention in the first post that we would have to keep a close eye on the weather and if looks really nasty then accept it won't happen and delay it again until later in the year.

We'll be there assuming:
a) I'm sober
b) the weather's not too bad
c) we're not away for New Year

I'd comment that it is quite a long route for the time of year being talked about, but I appreciate it's been bloody difficult putting a route together in the area taking in the best of the roads. 4-hrs of driving time will easily become a 7-hr journey including stops. I don't want to interfere with the route too much, but I guess the upper loop (east of the M74) could be chopped to shorten it a bit (we covered the road to Moffat at the weekend there and it is a cracker though...), perhaps starting the route at Abington/Elvanfoot...

Easy enough to drop bits off the route there are a few escape options available along pretty much the entire circuit.
The only problem with losing the top loop is that the only other way to get to Elvanfoot from Moffat is along the M74, which is not the end of the world.

Not wanting to put a dampner on things but reading through the posts sounds abit like people are keen to do this run but are being a bit put off by the time of year, I personally loved the driving in Richards neck of the woods and would like to take as much time as possible driving around their again. I also appreciate that people are keen to get another meet together again as soon as possible, but it sounds like Richard is being asked to continually butcher up his route and plans to suit individuals.

Richard I know your work Schedule is abit ,,,shall we say awkward but would it be a possibility to leave this untill about march april time so everyone can take full advantage of the gorgous scenery and facilities in the area and to also do the FULL route. we could do an overnight camp out and make a proper job of it

Just my opinion.

Steve, that would have been my first thought but didn't want to impose on A11y's potential 2 day run April / May time and then our little trip poss in June, but I'm easy and will go with the flow and if we do wait till March we can have ICE CREAM :D

March would be ok with me. And we're less likely to have influential weather conditions....

Happy to do January or March...

I don't think this'd impact at all on any potential 2-day run in April/May :). The pattern of meets for the last couple of years has been:

* Late-March/Early-April: day meet to start the year off (Dunkeld in 2010; Oban in 2011)
* End-April/start-May: weekend trip further afield (nothing in 2010; Skye in 2011)
* Start-July: national meet in the Lakes (Lakes in 2010 and 2011 - I understand from Craig this'll be August in 2012)
* Late-Aug/early-Sept: another weekend trip away further afield (Skye in 2010; Islay in 2011)
* Late-Oct: day meet to finish the year off (Fife/St Andrews 2010; Moffat/SQ 2011)[/list]

I know from the planning thread (which is probably where I should be posting this) that a few others are keen to plan trips next year. I've got something in mind for a 2/3-day trip for end-April/start-May (keeping it early so that it's far enough before the June 2012 trip) so would be keen to plan that one as long as nobody has any objections, so I'm more than happy for others to plan others at other times of the year.

This Moffat/Dumfries meet could be bumped back to being the late-March/early April day meet? Ice-cream

Totally your shout Richard, you know I will be there anyway weather permitting, Personally I think you will get a better turn out if it is left till a bit later and people will be more willing to do an overnight stay to do the full run at that time of year. You may have to do a willy wavers Moffat meet Re - re launch if you do change it

Likewise, if I'm not still pissed from Hogmanay and the weather allows, I'll be there. But as with Nosa I'm happy if you decide to leave it til later :)

seems like Richard's Meet would be a great way to start the year off and we may get some south of the border interest coming up to it if it was 1st meet of the season.... clearly if it fits in with your work to do it in Jan., Richard I'm sure we'll all turn up.

we could always do a social get together on the 3rd Jan .

Can i suggest we start sketching out who does what next year ..... as a11y says we seem to be falling into a pattern that works for people.

Nothing to stop some impromptu get togethers but we could get some runs to names.

Been thinking long and hard about this and to quote Monty Python my brain hurts but may have come up with a potentially cunning and devious plan.
Taking on board comments about people possibly making it an overnighter and trying to do the impossible and please all of the people all the time, I was thinking if we leave it till March we could meet up in Moffat as planned but later in the day, take a leisurley drive to Portpatrick following the planned route, spend the night in Portpatrick (several pubs, restuarants etc) and then follow the planned route back to Moffat with ICE CREAM at Cream O Galloway :D

Too much ice-cream?

:P

Sounds like a good plan - depending on the weather and other plans, I can already see a plan developing involving mountain-biking, z4-focum meet in Moffat, the campervan, and a pub. Oh, and ice-cream too :)
