Modified CDV Fitted At Last!

By replacing the valve with a modified one, the dealer would never even know about it. There is no way they would remove a CDV just to have a look at a hole in it ...

On the Non M version, it made a lot of difference (hence my spare one being used by srhutch), but I found the effect on the M much less so (not tried on my own car, only on someone elses M where we did the mod).

Just not sure if I can be bothered to lay underneath the car again to do it ... (if I had access to a bridge, I would do it though)

Quick Update

I picked up some tools from work and tonight will remove the valve from the one I replaced on Friday, just to ensure I can repeat the procedue.

And then it's all systems Go.

For some reason, there is an M version and a normal version on the Zeckhausen website. However, when I compared the two I did not really see a difference. Does anyone know the difference?

No doubt others will disagree but, BMW would have to prove that by using a modified CDV that this has caused the problem.

The main reason the CDV is modified instead of just being removed is so the dealer is unaware of the mod, although driving it could be a giveaway.

That's my fear. They always drive your car at the dealership...even if it's just around the corner to the repair bay. If I go in for a clutch replacement, I'm sure I'd be in for an argument. Oh well...I'll just wait 15 months then do it! Thanks for the info!

But if you have a problem with the clutch, the dealer driving it probably wouldnt pick on on the CDV

I was delighted to discover that the part for the Z4 is also one and the same for a 6-sp manual X3 so now my wife's X3 and my Z4 are now CDV-less and I have one of the old OEM versions on the shelf in case I ever needed to switch back.

Happily dealer shop techs have no clue what an X3 manual is supposed to feel like so there is almost no chance they would spot it no matter how much they drove it :D

Finally got my CVD fitted today, purely by chance.

.............. clutch feels a touch lighter (probably my imagination)
It's not your imagination.......

The OE valve is a restrictive orifice.
It takes more force to push the oil through the smaller OE opening.

grrr, stop talking about it. I really don't wany to lay under the car to remove it on my current car :D

Yes you do! The CDV needs to be replaced!! The car will be soooooo much better :P

Sorry, guys not had much chance recently.

I did have a go at the one I took off my car, but although I used the blunt end of the drill piece I was given it sheared the inner valve clear off. I think this was because the drill bit I used was not HSS and the edges werent shamfered.

Now I dont see this as a problem as I have a non restricted bore and the piece was ejected cleanly, but I want to see if I can get the insert out with a slightly larger drill bit.

I have access to drill bits with .1mm increments so will take it to work tomorrow and see what I can do.

I just dont want to offer a service if I'm not 100% confident.

Hope it goes well mate. I would have thought flat end drills would be more for Counter Bores than drilling out, i guess you will do better with the pre chamfered drill bits.

Cheers

With regard to the flat end I mean the end you normally put in the chuck, but a lot of our tools dont appear to have chamfers on them which I think is the problem, but I will get there.
