Modified CDV Fitted At Last!

Finally got my CVD fitted today, purely by chance.

I know it's been said beofre, but bloody hell what a difference, even driving away from the garage you could tell.

The whole driving experience is greatly improved, gear changes are much smoother, no clutch judder at all now, clutch feels a touch lighter (probably my imagination)
To be honest it feels much like my old E46 now.

If you havent done this mod yet, make it the next one.

The upside for you lucky lot is not I have the modified one I will do a video post on how to modify.

Unmodified CDV from PVR £0
Cost to modify £0 http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1227&p=17580&hilit=how+to+modify+valve#p17422
Cost to Fit by Garage £0 (15 minutes)

Total cost £0

For those who do not want to modify the valve themselves I am considering offering this service, and any sending and profits to Sp3ctre to help with the upkeep of the board.

Short answer, finid a good garage to do the job, first one let me down, second wanted a small fortune.

Found out we use this garage ato work, so as the old saying goes, it's who you know, not what you know.

I still don't understand the people who say they do this mod and say it doesn't make a difference. Like you I could tell the difference as I drove out of the garage!

I'd never even heard of this before! It's amazing how useful forums can be. Not sure I'd trust myself to do this, so can anyone recommend someone in the Cambs/Beds area?

If you dont get any, just suggest phoning around. I called munic legends just up the road from where I work http://www.munichlegends.co.uk/homepage.html and they said it would take an hour and labour rates were same as my main dealer.

You know its a 15-20 minute job, so shouldnt cost more that £20-30

Do you have a modified CDV yet?

To my knowledge there are no suppliers in the UK.

A new unmodified CDV from you local dealer is less than a tenner, you could then mod yourself using my instructions above and replace the existing.

Or hopefully I will offer the modification service. Would charge £20 for a new CDV modified, or £10 for exchange CDV (Unmodified one return to me after fitting)
price would include return postage.

This way for every CDV I mod I could return approx £8 to Sp3ctre which I'm sure would be useful.

I need to run past Sp3ctre to ensure he is happy with this and find a good way to work it, but I'm sure it's possible.

Whats a CDV? :tumbleweed:

Clutch Delay Valve http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1227&p=17580&hilit=how+to+modify+valve#p17422

Basically when you remove you foot from the clutch, no matter how fast you do this the valve restricts the flow of the Hydraulic fluid and releases the clutch it it's own rate.

The idea is to prevent the clutch from being dumped and causing transmission damage, but it increases clutch wear due to slip, and makes gear changes very un smooth especially first to second.

Please let me know if you're going to go ahead and offer the mod as it seems like a good way to give something back to the forum. I'll hold off doing anything for now.

I have been busy with the forum upgrade so only just seen this. If you decide to offer this service that would be cool, assistance with the forum is always appreciated. :)

Looks like I better get my arse in gear.

As a matter of interest what would you go for an exchange unit or a new one?

Makes no difference to me, but guess I would need a deposit for the exchange unit to ensure I got the unmoddified one backs

Have to ask this...won't modifying the CDV void the warranty on the clutch? My clutch is replaced for free...if it needs to be in the next 15 months while under warranty. I would think this deletion would cause them not to do it. This is why I've held off on this mod. Anyone have experience with this?

No doubt others will disagree but, BMW would have to prove that by using a modified CDV that this has caused the problem.

The main reason the CDV is modified instead of just being removed is so the dealer is unaware of the mod, although driving it could be a giveaway.

It is also argued that by using a modified CDV that clutch life improves as there is less slip (although that depends how you drive).

I have no experience either way, my car is only 12 months old with 9,000 miles on the clock, I plan to keep for a long time, hopefully soon as my weekend drive, so the benefits to me are it drives a hell of a lot nicer, and hopefully the clutch will last longer (though we will never know).

Good plan Mate,

So Can you start up a list for modified CDV's I would want one non part ex because worst case the old one could be put back.

Cheers

PaulN

Think Id want a new one too.

Having just had a clutch replaced bang on the end of my warranty and at 30k miles I would like to ensure longer clutch life for the future :)

Thanks,

Gannet.
