Modifications that add some value

I am looking at doing a couple of modifications to my E89 3.0i. Auto 2010 I am hoping they will add a little value to offset the costs. So I am thinking of;

Apple Car Play integration
Eisenmann Exhaust (not too loud) but a better tone/burble

The car has already been lowered 10mm which is nice

The other thing is the service history is a bit patchy and I would need me to go round a couple of BMW service centres. The car has visited BMW regularly over the years but I just have some print outs and confirmation of visits but no actual details. Is it worth the effort chasing these down?

thanks

Modifications that add value? None.
If anything modifications reduce value!

Yes it is worth chasing down the service history, if you phone and find out which service centres did the work, you can post the log book to them and they will stamp it for you.

Agree with the above. The best way to get money back from modification is to sell separately at resale IMO.

Trying to get the service info Is a good idea. They may be able to reveal more when they plug in the key.

All your ideas are laudable but unlikely IMHO to add any value..

Mods are a very personal thing...I personally would probably not buy a car with a modded exhaust..as an example..Apple CarPlay has its costs and again how many people buying a 10 year old analogue car will be that bothered...

Service history wise on a 10 year old car with several owners again is offset by physical condition IMHO..

If you want to do the mods for your own benefit and joy then fill your boots and do what you want to do...you don’t need to justify or answer to anyone ...just do them!

Best mod to add value to the Zed has got to be removal of the whippy aerial and fitting a stubby :D

The exhaust will lower resale value if anything. Adding carplay might make the car more attractive if it's the genuine BMW setup but if it's an aftermarket android tablet retrofit thing then I'd expect that to really take a chunk out of the future value.

If you PM me your cars VIN number I can lookup the service history from the BMW system.

Like others have said modifying the car wont add value. If you want to keep it sellable for the future then keep it stock, as clean and tidy as you can and chase up the service history and keep a file, so people can see what’s been done and when.

Or, make the mods yourself for you to enjoy and remove them when you come to sell.

I sent you the service history in a PM but it's stuck in my outbox. Let me know if you get it or not, the PM system on this forum is wonky.

I think some mods could be beneficial, if the car does not have a wind deflector, you could add one of these, but would still make more money sold separately than with the car.

I think if you really consider the customer base for the cars in a few years as they devalue, most likely boy racers and the like, a few 'sporty' additions might add value.
Just do what you want its your car... I replaced my centre console lighter with an eject button.......

I agree having mods will not make the car worth more. I have an E89 which I have had mapped and fitted good quality mods including an M performance front brake kit, Supersprint exhaust, rear M sport diffuser and alloy wheels with non RFTs.I have kept the original parts so come the time that I do sell the car it will be put back to standard and the mods I have purchased will be sold and that way I will recoup some of the money spent.

cruise control? It seems a really sensible upgrade. Although I have noticed that the accelerator pedal is perfectly weighted so the speed doesn't creep up much

Quality of life mods will make the car more attractive to buyers, but not worth more I'm afraid. My car has a SmartTOP module for remote roof and folding mirrors, and a Tune2air module to use spotify with the steering controls, but I fully expect these to not add any value other than more purchase incentive.

Your biggest cost recoup will come from keeping a very tidy example of the car, with logs of everything you've done showing due care and diligence.

I'm with the concusses. Modding your car will not add value, unless it's a very expensive mod, like fitting a super charger to an S54. Even then you limit your audience at sale time. If your going for Mods, add the ones you like.

Adding OEM optional extras, lets use cruise as an example, may not necessarily increase value... but to those hell bent on buying to an exact spec it will increase the pool of potential purchasers. Which should avoid haggling, etc.

For some people a car being lowered especially a BMW would definitely put them off rather than add value

Admittedly I haven't had an E89, but I think the principle is the same for most cars and certainly for other Z4s.

My car had been fitted with over £1,000 of H & R coil-over suspension, CSL replica wheels with spacers and Powerflow back boxes, and I didn't pay any more for it than a standard car. If anything it may have been a bit cheaper because of those mods because I wouldn't have chosen that suspension and got the spacers off soon after I got the car!

As someone already said, the only things that might make a car more attractive, but not necessarily more valuable, are things like cruise, M-Sport seats, an OE head unit with DAB, etc.

But I'm all in favour of any owner getting their car how they like it - it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks!
