Mobile phone car mounts advice please..

Siftah - if it helps when I removed a Sony handsfree kit that was wired in it was taking power from the switches above the ashtray, I think the heated seat switch from memory.

Cheers Klarky, yeah, that is a good idea. I guess it's drawing it from the switch supply (ie: for the the light on the switch) rather than the supply for the heated seats. I was under the impression the switches on the dash were all (or at least mostly) on the iBUS rather than wired in to electricals.

I'll have to have a poke about on them and see what's what, I guess the 200mA or so required for a phone charger should be do-able from the switch supply... :\

After several rounds with the Dremel, I've modified a standard IPhone dock ($7, Ebay) into a dock that will accept an IPhone while in its Otterbox case. See below. It ain't pretty, but it works. I would like to see how others have mounted their dock into their ashtray area, before I do any additional cutting. Pics, anyone?

Thanks,

Wiseguy

I like it. I was really interested in doing something similar if there was a docking station/charger for the HTC Touch Pro2. I really wanted something that could be hidden when not in use.

I think hertsz4 had created something like it for his iPhone but his pics aren't displaying anymore on his earlier post in this thread.

dash genie says "Even if your dashboard has a dimpled or textured surface the Dash Genie will still offer maximum grip meaning your phone will stay secure."

you wouldnt be able to see the phone on the other one while driving as you couldn't lean it back due to where the power socket is - which may defeat your idea of using the phone for sat nav

Rob, you are correct. However, the navigation software on my phone sucks and will only be used as a backup. I'll use a regular GPS with a Brodit clip when travelling to parts unknown. I think I could see the IPhone's caller ID while on the cradle, which is better than the BMW radio readout, as the IPhone doesn't switch from the caller's name to the telephone number after a few seconds, like the radio screen does. Also, it's handier in the ashtray than lying in the glovebox or center console, in the event I need to use the phone itself.
