Mobile phone car mounts advice please..

Hi Guys,

Having checked with sp3ctre before launching this thread (hyperlinks to a commercial site), I thought I would seek some knowledge and wisdom from the community.

As I don’t have a factory fitted sat nav in my Z4, I've been on the hunt for a good quality car mount kit for my mobile (which has sat nav built in) and came across this 'new technology' item:

Dash Genie

and also this item which is a slightly different take on the whole in-car charger/holder design:

Trailblazer Universal Car Charger And Holder

Has anyone seen or got one of these and can shed any light on whether either are any good? Ideally, I'm looking for something non-window suctionesque. If anyone knows of anything else that they have used, your thoughts would be fully appreciated.

Ta!

Sorry - don't have experience of these, but the Dash Genie looks interesting. How does it stay on the dash - I assume it is similar to the pad that keeps the phone on? So it can be removed easily, no sticky pads or residue on your car...

Hi Adam,

The first one is a suction mount I think, as such it won't sdhere to the baseball type material on the dashboard. The second is interesting, providing it is stiff enough inside the socket it may work, else it will flop around all over the place.

(yes, I do realise that last sentence sounded a bit dodgy... wasn't meant to) :)

This looks good...

+1 for Brodit mountings Have one in both cars holding a Garmin , key for me is no damage

Thanks to all who have given advice so far...

The Brodit offering looks interesting. Does the bracket require any additional device specific parts that need to be ordered seperately?

Yes, You buy the Z4 specific clip which really is a quality bit of kit and then attach to it the accessory mount of your choice. i have the very item with a mount for a Nokia 6310i (which could be removed ) if your interested PM me

but why do you want a phone mount if its not integrated via b/tooth etc..(if it is then it can live in the glove box surely?)...best and SAFEST place for it is in the boot IMHO..... :poke:

How does he see his sat-nav if the phone is in the glovebox or boot?

I struggled to find a suitable mount for the iphone, so i kinda made one. It's pretty much a small desktop charger adapted and secured in the ashtray area. So when it's closed it all still looks factory. But when opened you can charge your phone, as it's central to the car it also doesn't look out of place, i only really did as i occasionally use as my Sat Nav oh and it's cheap cost around £6 and a couple hours of my time !

Won't suit all but works for me !

I use this...

Works great except that you have to keep the ashtray flap open all the time. For iPhone and iPod touch only obviously.

Hertsz4,

I do like what you've done there.

When I first bought the Z4 i was looking for a cubby hole in or around the dashboard to place my handset and one of the places I tried was the ashtray (but obviously it slid around having no support).

Any chance of a how-to?

F1ADAM,
No problem, when i've got a minute i'll pop the unit out a take a better photo, very simply though, it's one of these;

with some very slight adjustments to the ashtray area, plugged into a simple;

The charger is just connected to an ignition switched supply behind the dash.

Thanks Hertz4, look forward to it.

Hi guys,

It's been a while since this thread was launched but just wanted to add some closure to it (for my part anyway).

Decided in the end on the Brodit Proclip option. Finally got the HTC Touch Pro 2 Holder having had the Mount in place for about 2 weeks.

Looks really good! I like the fact that the holder swivels to a comfortable viewing position as well as tilting to landscape - very useful when needing a full keyboard and, as mentioned in early posts, no damage to the car when installed plus it's generally out of site to the world outside.

Anyways, thank you to all who raised suggestions/gave advice, you have helped me a great deal in narrowing down to my final choice.

hertsz4, I'm looking forward to one or more photos of your ashtray/IPhone mount. I've got the dock you used, and I'm working on getting it to accept my IPhone while in its Otterbox case. For $7, it's worth a shot with my Dremel.

Would love to know where that ignition switched supply is you used - I've still not managed to find a decent one! :)

Just wanted to say +1 for the Brodit mount, mine sits a little closer to the controls than in the pictures on their site but it's a good fit.

I can upload a picture if anyone wants.
