mist in car

HI fellas.

I've a bit of a problem (besides being french) / or a silly question.

In all the Beemers I've had, well actually most cars, on climate control I never turn on the Air Con button but still leave it in Auto. In the Z, unless I do press it the car gets all misted up no matter what the weather is like.

I did find find the logbook papers had water marks (instruction manual pages stuck together etc  ) and I'm wondering if it had some kind of previous water damage. Also the fag lighter does not work. Conincidence?

Besides that, I've never noticed anything untowards in the car's condition when cleaning it etc (no musty smell and all the carpet look OK).

Any clues guys?

If you never have the air-con button on the the air-con circuit will not be dehumidifying the air as it processes it, and won't be dumping any water out under the car when you park.

Mine is on 24/7/365 - except for when it goes to the dealer and they turn it all off again. When I turn the AC back on I get condensation all up the windscreen. 10 seconds later it is gone.

Yep I also leave mine in full auto with ac on, even in winter... Just to dehumidify the inside.

As soon as I press auto the ac comes on.

What I don't understand is why the car gets misty without the AC on. Its never done it on any other car. wierd...

Excessive misting up is usually caused by the 'air-re-circulate' option being on.

Do we have one in the Z4? Am not with my car so can't check.

I have the same problem when the Air Con button isn't on. I found that it's strange when it mists up very quickly. Why doesn't this happen on my Series 1 when I rarely use the Air Con in the winter?
I thought that this could be a problem caused by it being a softop roadster. :|

I'll leave the car running and heating on max with AC off and windows open for a while tonight and see what happens.

Not true - the air would simply dry even faster than usual. :D

Why would you leave the aircon OFF like that? Half the point of having it ON is that it dehumidifies the air? :?

With heat on as well it should have the windows clear within 3-5 minutes, unless theres excessive moisture in the form of droplets as opposed to just misting....even that will go after 5-10 mins?

This is really simple.....aircon ought to be on pretty much all the time (unless the roof is down of course :) ), hot or cold. If it isn't, the seals in the system will dry up and break down, losing all your gas and making for an expensive repair job.

And as mentioned, if your pollen filter is old and tired it won't help.....

Depends. If the re-circ is 'on' with the a/c in operation, it will dry quicker. If it's 'on' with the a/c off, it causes dampness as it recirculates your moist, breathed air.

T'is true

I don't understand why you would switch it off because it is winter ? Though it's called 'air con', it's actually automatic climate control - you set the desired temperature, decide if you want fresh or re-circ air, et voila ! As said above, the point is that it dehumidifies the air at the same time, so no moisture. Without it on, warm damp air on a cold window = moisture / fogging, right ? The only time I switch it off is with the top down because it's pointless, and justs wastes the extra fuel the system uses... Of course that won't ever be a choice you have to make in a coupe :D

Soon clears when you put the roof down in the morning to watch the sun come up  sorry wrong thread perhaps :)

Well I did leave the heating on, no AC, no recirculating and it did the trick... for a few days and now its raining it come back again. What a pain. Using the AC takes power out if the engine (Yes I am being pedantic) :P

Using AC also increases fuel consumption... but so does my right foot

MIght also be worth checking doors etc for blocked drains. Had this in my girlfriends fiesta. It turned out to be because the drivers side door drain was block and it was essentially full of water.
