Missing BMW - A 535d...?

Try a 330/335 d against the 530/535d Woody , i never liked the feel, size & ride of our 5 tourer sport although i did like the looks .
It also felt hard even with the rear suspension being hydraulic ( this can be issue on older models so check that )
Idrive freezing can also be common & they do seem to like eating front discs :? probably the sheer brutishness of stopping such a hulk of a car .
Now our 330d on the softer Se spec just drives so much better & being smaller seems to handle far better + now remapped it won;t be far off the capabilities of a 535d , sitting at 29mpg currently with just town driving , soon hits 38/40 on a run & believe it or not when you cane it there is a nice mechanical noise comes into the cabin that isn't usual diesel clatter
whichever you go for forget the idea of keeping it 8 years mate :P that must have been a typo

Tbh Woody I just sold our 525d m sport touring for a number of reasons, firstly it was a pre lci 07 , and there was rubbish for a number of reasons shocking on mpg got around 28 mpg did not matter how you drove it , it always was the same once you factor in that the black stuff is more expensive than the normal unleaded it take the real world mpg a few notches. Also the biggest issue buy a country mile was the terrible gearbox I opted for the auto as after the RRS I had a soft spot for autos on the family wagon and its shocking most un soposticated thing I have ever driven it was terrible , on the bright side they look freckling awesome! If you decided to get a 5 series make sure it post 2007 , only issue then is a 535d will be about 16k

Why not a 3.0si coupe you can get near 40 mpg on a run , cheap to run no "m" premium and look lovely ?

The real question i guess ......is one practical car enought at the Woody Palace?.. If it is... Well plenty out there... Ps your never keep a car 8 years!

8 years! Jesus, you might as well be dead.

Oddly enough I was thinking about you the other day Woody. I was passed by a Mazda 6 MPS on the motorway and I remembered that you'd bought one. I wondered how it was going because my initial thought when i looked at it was..... Now that is one soulless car. I caught the eye of the guy driving it and his eyes were black and dead like a sharks. So I've been waiting for this thread.

35d of any description is a brute. 30d with a remap is 35d quick and less thirsty. Owners of 35d's seem to get massively varying economy figures. Some say mid to high 30s but I know one guy who averaged 18mpg over his 3 year ownership :D .

My remapped 335d is showing on regular basis avg 38mpg,got 42mpg going to donnington last year ! My wife drives it most of the time. It will go to low 30's if i'am out playing with it but with 350 bhp Happy days

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback :) Enjoyed reading those posts! Fair play for trying to entice me back into a Z4 :D BUT it has to be something big, the wife only has a small car and although I don't like it that much, she loves it and that's all that matters. I'll be the one who'll have the family hack so I'd rather have something a little spicy, then maybe when I'm a bit older I could get a weekend toy :)

I think I'm going to 'put up' with the Mazda for a year to make use of all the goodies that came with it as it should give me hassle free motoring, and it's not exactly a Daewoo Matiz...

Then when I REALLY need an estate (1-2 years...?) I can see if the post 07' LCI 530/5d is a bit cheaper or if the 330/5d is more affordable.

It's going to be a long year...!

Thanks again for your input guys and girls :) I'm trying my best to pop in now and then, few thousand unread posts now :( And I saw a Z4MC on Whiteladies Road in Bristol the other day

Definitely diesel?

Loving my 330i. Same engine as facelift e85/86s (N52 although 258ps in the e90) hence bloody nice exhaust note and reasonably economical - 28mpg vs 30mpg I used to get in my 3.0 pre-facelift Z4. Yes it's heavier but it still shifts, and I find the ride/handling better too despite the extra weight. Suspension travel, it's something the Z4 was somewhat lacking in! Considered as one of the more fun combo's in the e90 engine range, being non-diesel, non-turbo and reasonable balance of economy and performance, yet don't command the silly prices that 335i/d's tend to command. It 's a great compromise if you need something to double up as a family hack like I need.

330i e91 (estate) would fit your needs IMO.

Thanks ally, good thought process. So something like this:
