Missing and hating my Z4

Hey guys

I had to have my 2.00L E85 Z4 repaired for the seat airbag light and now it’s been at garage for 2 weeks as the garage is extremely busy. (I trust this garage and they do good work for reasonable prices)

Is it normal to miss a car and even to start to hate it at the same time and now I want to sell it.

It’s worse as maybe I might see 1 other z4 a day now I see 6 or 7 per day, dam you sunshine. I was maybe thinking about getting a dirt cheap car for a short while and then saving for a secondhand 30i e89.

What do you guys think? I think that I am going crazy lol

Thanks

you're not going crazy, I've only have mine 6 months and am already looking at 3.0si E85's and dreaming of maybe in a few years getting a i28 E89.
It's the human condition I'm afraid; in the words of John Dewy: "arriving at one goal is the starting point to another" :(

I think 2 weeks is way too long for an airbag warning light, couple of resisters and half an hour of your time and you could probably sort it yourself!

I wish I could of but I lack the knowledge.

there's no way out of this for me, i've invested way to much in my E85

yes same with the westy... the quick cheap engine swap has certainly cost a teeeeny bit more than was planned.

I don't understand why you would leave it there... Surely you book it in, and then just take it along for the day they need it to fix it :?

I could have sworn it was Vbstein's car I saw at a track day yesterday, being driven very enthusiastically by a guy would said he was a mechanic!

It's good to not see the Zed for a few weeks, when you seeit again you should appreciate it all the more. :D If that doesn't happen it's time to move on. :(

Main dealers are expensive no doubt - but book it in, have it fixed, drive away!
They tend not to hang onto the car for two weeks.

2 weeks ?? you can buy the little adapter fix for a tenner and just plug it in in less than 10mins

Out of interest, what are you removing and what's the replacement?

standard slivertop on 45mm jenveys to a st170 blacktop on the jenveys, had the head ported/polished to a some stage-blah-blah thingy, retarding the exhauast 6deg, and a 3d map gizmo for the inlet vvt. the real costs ramped up buying high torque starters/small alternators/ water rails/hoses/belts etc you name it its been replaced/upgraded/refurbed. biggest issue was cylinder 1 was filling with coolant :headbang: so something may be wrong with the head or the gasket wasn't right when i fitted it. hopefully the latter. going to set fire to it soon as i am missing stonelighy gor the first time in years due to the engine being in bits again...

Sounds frustrating...but it will be well worth it. It's my understanding that set up properly, the ST170 can give Duratec levels of performance with out the costs. What are you doing with your current Zetec?
I'm still running a 2.1l Pinto in mine. It's very reliable but weighs a ton! That said, it eats alternators. The alternator sits next to the exhaust manifold so it gets cooked when the engine has been very hot and the car is left standing in the pits. I've made every effort to thermally insulate the manifold and I always I do a cool down lap or two, so I thought I'd solved the problem. However, last week at a track day I was doing very long stints (more than 30 minutes at a time on the track) because it was one of those days where everything was running perfectly (including me 8) ), the weather was good and, once up to temperature, the R888s were completely unstickable. By the end of the day the car wouldn't start and I had to use a jumping pack. The alternator has broken up, so I've around three weeks to rebuild it before my next track day. I'll also have to try to solve my heat soak issues in that time :headbang:

the costs are still there i would say well they are for me as ive replaced alot of items..... including a nice set of willwood 4 pots at stoneleigh. but when set up right the torque is great. i have full control of the maps etc for mine so it should run well, just need to decide if its going to be tuned for 98 or 99 ron. the silvertop made 155bhp at the wheels which was good. i expect this one to be a bit higher but with better torque.

the head is deffo goosed and back at the head guy as it was leaking somewhere in cylinder 1 exhaust port. possibly he's nicked a gallery.

my current zetec is sat at the back of the garage not doing a right lot accompanied by a pile of bits. biggest problem is its lacking a sump due to me swapping the low-level one onto the st170. the zetecs still suffer from heat soak into the starter but this can be overcome with a high torque one and a bit of a cover.

saw a decent post the other day where someone had put some 12V cpu fans on a bracket next to the starter and had a delay timer on permanent live to help with the pinto exhaust issue.
