If you're expecting your next service to be an oil service (albeit in 10000 miles) and it shows up as an inspection, is it possible someone has just reset the service indicator? I think an intravee allows you to see such things, how else can it be done? Will hooking it up to INPA show service indicator resets?

How do BMW do official service entries, do they use INPA? Meaning any unscrupulous garage could trick the car into thinking it has been serviced?
 
Probably reset the service indicator when they should have left it alone. Your not the first and won't be the last this has happened to.
 
On the other hand, there may be nothing wrong, let me post the full details.

03/09/08, 17450 miles, oil service, bmw
01/06/09, 28600 miles, brake fluid, bmw
07/11/09, 36250 miles, inspection 1, bmw
21/02/2012, 52800 miles, ???, other garage

Around 16000 miles and just over 2 years between inspection 1 and last service entry. Initially I thought that sounded too much, meaning the last service entry should have been an inspection 2 and there was no proof of an oil service inbetween. The confusion is because whichever fool filled in the last service entry ticked all the boxes (oil service, inspection 1, inspection 2, air cleaner element and diesel fuel filter!).

Is it feasible the last entry was an oil service and the service in 10,000 miles is inspection 2? Car currently has 58000 miles on it. I'm considering having an inspection 2 done at an independent along with a general once over and a brake fluid change before the next service interval anyway - peace of mind and all that.

How do I get a definitive answer on if the service indicator has been reset? Presumably bmw could tell me, any other way?
 
I would say your indicator is correct - the 52800 service would have been an oil service and you are now showing an inspection as the next one - Inspection 2. 16k between services is possible for a non-M.
 
I managed a lot more than 16,000 miles on my 3.0si, so that is entirely possible.

As Mike has said, you need an Inspection 2 next.

Mind you, once that "timed" oil and filter is done, then what happens to the service routine because I agree that the next service should be an Insp 2.
 
How time based service affects the mileage based service depends on if the timer is enabled on the car or not. If it's enabled, just do what it says and reset the correct indicator after the service.

If the timer is not enabled, BMW released a SIB directing mechanics to NOT reset the mileage based service indicator for time based service unless the service indicator is fairly close to calling for another service.

I agree that it's missed a brake fluid change, although oil/filter should have done along with inspection 1 at 07/11/09.

Think I'll get a brake fluid change along with oil/filter and some preventative maintenance for peace of mind - no confidence in the unknown garage! Doubt I'll do more than 5k a year so will see how quickly the inspection 2 countdown moves along. Probably won't leave it longer than Jan 2014 until I get it down though :)
