Miss Fire, weekend ruined.

Had the car less than 2 months; have spent thousands on cleaning, badges, Inspection 2 (was described as a very clean car with no problems all the shims were fine etc) new tire all round etc etc...

Got in it tonight after a few days stationary as I was away, started fine, drove it half a mile and then misfire. Started only with the engine under load, then all the time. Had to limp home under 2,000rpm, now even does it at idle.

Seems like 1 or more cylinders are misfiring, no metallic sounds or any smoke or any thing... but it’s very not right.

Booking it in with the Indy who did the inspection 2 on Monday but weekend of driving to Dartmoor with the Mrs ruined. Couldn’t be more angry.

Any ideas or shared experience? I’m so hoping it’s just a spark plug!
 
Coil pack/s? I'd be thinking those personally.

I ran mine on fumes once which resulted in a limp home mode moment, was told the car hates being run low on Super UL
 
Change all your coil packs out and all will be well with the world. Very easy to do and not expensive.

I had a similar problem with a BMW 130i a couple of years ago and it was the Coil Packs, only on one cylinder, but I replaced all 6 :thumbsup:

If it is a coil, which it could well be, you can pick them up from ECP for less than £20 each.

If the issue is in fact a coil failure, you can work out which one and change in no more than 15 mins. The actual coil change takes 3-4 mins.

I had one coil go more than 2 years ago, no more have failed since. I now keep a spare in the boot, personally I don’t get why you would change all of them.

Debating whether to give this a go myself or use an Indy, problem is getting it to them... on a scale of 1-10 for a mechanical newbie, is this something I should attempt as a first job?

I’m just thinking I should get the codes read first... although I don’t suppose I can really do any damage...? Looking at the parts and there seem to be 2 fitments when I put my reg in to websites... so will need to make sure I get the right part number. Does anyone have any details if you’ve done it before? If not I can figure it out, don’t want to be a total newb, just thought I’d ask.
 
Take a coil pack off and take it with you to the shop (assuming you’ll drive a different car to the shop).

The only difference I found between the coils types was a small tab where it connects.
 
Get a code reader, they are cheap enough to buy and will serve you well into the future of this cars ownership.

Coils or shitty fuel/crap in tank is my guess. :thumbsup:
 
Well update, it’s not the coils. Took the cover off and unplugged them each in turn, obvious misfire from each one when unplugged. So I have realised the intermittent spluttering isn’t coming from that. Perhaps it’s a fuel issue, I have bought a Carly, but am also going to take it to the Indy... glad I didn’t buy 6 coils!

This is why I shouldn’t try and diagnose things, Indie says it’s the Coil pack on one cylinder So is going to change them for me, Will see if that fixes it!! Carly on its way anyway!
 
All resolved chaps, was the Coils. Thanks for all your advice, saved me a lot of worry and general messing about. Will be plugging in the Carly this weekend for a play and explore. If anyone is in Hampshire and wants to use it, let me know!
