Misfires and Wobbly Sensor Identification

Good evening and Merry Christmas to everyone,

My 2004 BMW Z4 with 64000 has been having a misfire and fuel bank 2 issue for more than a year now. It’s been in and out of the shop but the problem keeps coming back no matter what is fixed. Today my mechanic told me it is not worth fixing and spending the money since it keeps misfiring so I am coming here as a last resort. I absolutely love the car and really don’t want to get rid of it.

Thing about it is that it only feels like it’s misfiring when it’s idling (it can get pretty rough) but that only happens maybe once every 3 times I drive it and usually on high speeds I don’t feel the misfire at all and it is an extremely smooth ride. But once I get to slow speeds it starts to misfire again. Sometimes it corrects itself and stops but sometimes doesn’t.

All different things have been done to the car to no help, from smoke tests to new MAF, to new O2 sensors, and idle control modules but they only temporarily fix the issue.

Today I found a semi loose sensor and I need help identifying it. I’ll add the photo below. The sensor itself is plugged in snug but the head part twists and is wobbly. Maybe that is what is causing the issue? Please offer any advice if you’ve encountered similar issues. Really don’t want to lose this car…

I am usually getting codes 2744 Misfire 4, 2743 Misfire 3, 2883 Fuel bank 2, 274E Misfire Multiple Cylinders. But also getting an under voltage 93E7, 93E5 Indicator Lamp, airbag deactivation, short circuit to ground code. As well as instrument cluster 2B020220 code which my reader doesn’t know. Also a 281D BSD generator signal code.

Thank you so much for any advice or help

Generator signal code will be a bad diode pack in the alternator, replace alternator or fit a new diode pack.

The wobbly sensor you pictured is the Disa valve assembly it should not wobble it is broken and will allow air to get in which will play havoc with running and upset fueling as well as operation of the valve. Needs replacing.

That depends: if you mean just the electrical plug on it is wobbling then that is fairly normal. However if the whole assembly is loose then you’re in trouble. Only that plug and a couple of torx bolts to take it out and check it.

Reading more into the mechanics sentiment that may be more about the airbag codes- if they are persistent and throwing an airbag light (depending on your location in the world) that may take more fixing and £££ to solve than the misfire

Would be useful to list up what exactly had been done for the misfire otherwise we aren’t getting the full picture.

No new coils or sparks?
