Misfire coupe

Not had my coupe that long. After a run out last night in terrible weather developed Misfire.

Engine light came on.

I think it's a coil pack. I moved coil pack from 6 to 2. And Misfire moved from 6 to 2. So think it's coil pack. Any advice on coil packs?????

Whereabouts are you OP?

When I bought my 330i with the same N52 engine the previous owner had one go and replaced all 6, but he gave me the old ones so I should have 5 working ones if a cheap fix would help you out.

And welcome to the forum BTW.

We'd love to see a photo or 2 of your car.

They’re easy to change and don’t seem to fail in quick succession (I had my first fail around 2015 and the second died only a month or two ago), so there’s no advantage to changing all of them now, just swap the one that is dead.

The danger is that it’s pretty bad news for the catalyst pushing unburned fuel through them and you could well be several hundred miles away from home when the next one goes. Seems an obvious thing to change all 6 so you know that are all at the same age. It’s not like they are hugely expensive.

By that argument, everyone should change the coil packs as routine maintenance after a given mileage or at a given age since any car could have a coil pack failure without prior warning and at any distance from home...
I’ve owned my car for ten years and 55,000 miles, during which time two have failed with an interval of four years and 20,000 miles between them. The other four are the originals, unless they were changed in the first 25,000 miles and two years of the car’s life.
I agree that a misfire can damage the cat, so I wouldn’t drive any distance with a failed coil pack, but I don’t see the logic in changing all six when five are working.

I certainly wouldn’t argue with anyone that classed them as a routine maintenance item given how commonly they fail, ESPECIALLY if one has failed already and they are all a similar age. I don’t understand anyone that would risk a £1,000 cat for the sake of £100 worth of coil pack. Let alone the hassle and inconvenience of another one going in some remote location.

67% of the original coil packs in my car have lasted 80k miles and 13 years, that’s hardly indicative of a frequent rate of failure.
What do you recommend as the mileage at which to change all six? When the second failed at 80k miles? Or when the first failed at 60k miles? Earlier? Before every journey to a remote location perhaps?
I don’t understand anyone who would drive a car firing on only five of six cylinders. The cat is only at risk in the hands of such an owner.

I've had 1 go at 23,000 miles, and have kept a spare in the boot bag since. Not had another one go in the next 140,000 miles.

BUT, almost every Z4M I've seen has a different set of little foibles (e.g. I've never had any broken springs either), and I probably over-service the car as I do interim oil services and an an Inspection 2 every year (don't bother with an Inspection 1), so the spark plugs get replaced annually.

But as most people know, most other parts on my car have been replaced through age or accident damage :P

I carry a spare and the necessary tools in my boot too, but don’t tell ph001

Replaced coil pack and it's fine. But now i noticed it will not turn over at all occasionally usually when cold. After a couple of trys it suddenly is ok. Weird. I thought there was something I was doing wrong. Foot on clutch and brake or ????

This might be an ignition key barrel on the way out - another common problem
