Miserable

It's something about them not being allowed to let you leave with a dodgy tyre. I have had that. Even driving off with a cracked wheel, they don't like doing it.

The one thing I will not miss when I get my Boxster is the ride and the cracked wheels

They can bring it to your attention but they can't stop you from leaving-it's your car!
I've recently had new wheels fitted to mrs smartbears kia soul & the garage advised me the tyres were badly perished, they didn't stop me from leaving and purchasing the tyres from elsewhere.

The TPMS works by looking at the rotation speed of the wheel as has already been mentioned.

I think it may struggle with run-flat tyres as they maintain their profile when they lose pressure. Seems like a stupid way of checking for flats when you use run-flats as the OEM tyre.

Having come to the Z4 world from E9x 3-series ownership I was already well educated on the pit-falls of certain BMW alloy wheels and the OEM tyre choice.
I had the standard M-Sport MV3 wheels on my 3 series and had 3 of the wheels crack in my first 6 months of ownership. Once I swapped to normal tyres the wheels stopped cracking.

Certain people will tell you to keep run-flat tyres because of "safety". I do not class cracked wheels (which are almost impossible to spot and can cause a catastrophic blow-out at any time) and poor grip as safety features.

Do yourself a favour and bin the run-flats and buy a can of tyre foam.

I might take the hit and do that if I don't get anywhere with them on replacing these ones. Obviously the front one is my problem if the pressure indicator is functioning properly but I specifically asked if I could still drive my car when they said I had a cracked alloy and they said yes. To be told that driving on it has damaged the tyre and I have to fork out for it isn't right.

They should be replacing the wheels FOC.

I bought a 3yr old 3-series from an independent dealership and had my cracked wheels replaced free at a BMW dealership I had no prior relationship with.

Obviously some dealerships are better than others with the good-will replacements but BMW did announce at one point (shortly after the watchdog episode on BMW wheels cracking) that they would replace all wheels if they were found to pass the run-out test.

If your dealership is trying to charge then go to another or escalate the issue with them.

Also when my wheels were replaced they transferred the old tyre across. But I was on normal tyres not run-flats at the time.

While buying the Z4 I purposely kept away from certain wheel styles. Ended up buying from a fellow enthusiast who had fitted some BBS LM-R wheels to the car. No cracking woes this time around.

They've changed the wheel but they're saying the tyre is mangled and can't be put back on so I need to pay for a new one. I'd like to see the tyre and why it's so mangled but I'm still of the opinion that if the alloy has damaged the tyre then they should pay for that too

Had to fork out for a new tyre at the dealers. Got there to pick it up and he said we've noticed a bulge in your other rear tyre and that needs doing. At my tyre place now and he can't find a bulge strangely enough and said the front tyre is repairable so he's doing that now. I read you shouldn't repair run flats though but I guess he's the expert. Bit of a result hopefully

Update: I hope it's a bulge because the car feels absolutely awful to drive, very shuddery and the steering wheel is juddering. Back to the garage I go

Sounds like you need to find a better dealer to work with in your area mate. These guys sound awful.
Hope you get it sorted…
…and remind me if I ever buy an E89 to get one with non E89 wheels and non-RFTs. What a joke.

they're only a ten minute walk away but the convenience has now been outweighed by negativity. I love the car, just hasn't been the happiest ownership thus far unfortunately.

It was the 19s BMW had probs with, as far as I know the 18s on runflats have been fine.

As long as you're not planning on actually driving your car anywhere then the 296 are great
Feel for you Matt. Hope you get it sorted soon, cheaply and can enjoy the sunshine soon.

Hopefully tomorrow she will be back to her old self. I've used up all my working from home excuses recently so my dad is taking it for a new tyre in the morning
