minimum Thickness on front discs 3.0l SEi

Can anyome tell me the minimum thickness on the front discs of a 3.0l SEi. I think they start out 23.4mm thick. Mine are down to 20.2mm. BMW told me I need new discs and pads on the front. I found it funny that my discs have worn out before the 'Low Disc Pad' warning light. And on 31000 miles i just think it is a bit early. I was told over the phone that the work 'Had to be done' I said 'No.' When I picked the car up they didn't give me a written report saying that the work needed to be done, nor did they give me an advisory note. When I asked them what the minimum thickness was for the discs, he said that they are different for different cars. I said yes but I'm interested in MY car? The BMW guy said that 23.4mm is min and mine measure 20.2. I've measured them and i recon that they start off at 23.4mm, and are now down to 20.2mm. is this a problem? Thanks

IIRC the min servicable thickness is stamped on the outer edge of the disk.

Mileage is no real guide - they could be warped and useless in 10 miles or worn out with aggressive pads in a few thousand, but under normal driving I would have expected a lot more than your figure on an OEM set up

I managed to get through a set of standard discs and pads on a 3 series in 20K, and 22k for the rears, depends how much and how hard use use them as CJ said.

I have been getting right at 30,000 miles out of OEM pads and rotors. I know BMW recommends replacing both pads and rotors at the same time and with the USA warranty they do that without charge for the first 50,000 miles.

Many thanks guys.
I've owned the car from new and don't drive it that hard. i'm shocked that the discs have worn down. New Pads and Discs it will be :) Mark 0 BMW 1

Measured my disc thickness last night with a calibrated digital vernier. 21.36mm and 21.41mm. This gives me 0.5mm ish of wear still. Why did BMW tell me they were in the 20mm range? (Quite Friday afternoon?) I'm going to be doing low milage over the next few months so I'll replace the discs and pads at a later date. BMW 0 Mark 1 :D

I guess they err on the side of caution, want extra sales and doubt you can or will check anything they say or do...

I was looking for one of those. Where did you get yours from?

Many places online carry them. Go with Japanese made for the best cost/quality. Although the digital models are popular, if you go with the dial model the prices are less, you don't have to replace hard to find batteries which always die at a bad time, and they're not as sensitive to crud buildup and being knocked around (drop on floor).
