Mini or Fiesta?

Dear fellow enthusiasts please help me on this decision.
My 18 year old daughter is getting a new car and narrowed it down to a Mini One Deisel and a Fiesta Zetec 1.0 ecobost (great engine) . She will be doing about 15000 miles per year so economy is important

Now to me it's a no brainer to get the Mini, but then we do like them and my wife and other daighter have one each. Especially as it works out £22 per month cheaper for the Mini and comes with TLC. But she actually prefers the Fiesta although can see the reasoning behind my opinion.

Don't want to sway her into something she will regret

From what I've read the Ford eco boost engine gets nowhere near it's claims mpg figures.
If mpg is a major issue then I don't think the Ford will get any where near the One D.

I hope this gives you a bit of useful information that might help persuade your daughter in to buying the right car

Has she driven both ? The mini is a much nicer place to be and a much more rewarding drive in my opinion. Holds its value better, cheaper to run and better looking. A no brainer in my mind but the mind of an 18 yr old girl is probably vastly different.

The fiesta gives a pretty fun and nippy driving experience (especially with the 1.0T in 125PS guise) and there are big reductions to be had on list price. As mentioned though, the economy will be miles below the claimed 67mpg combined. More like mid-40s.

VED on both cars is free so unless the insurance is wildly more expensive for the Mini, it will probably work out cheaper over the kind of mileage your daughter would be doing.

My wife has a 62 plate fiesta eco boost thing (has the aston est front grill)

Its pretty nippy, certainly feels faster then my old cooper (not s) which i had moons ago.

Also comes with loads of toys in titanium trim... Bluetooth audio streaming, connected apps etc.

However on long drives i do find her seats uncomfortable as both passenger and driver.

The fiesta is cheaper to run/ service then a mini though.

The wife had the older shape car not with the Aston front end. It was amazing and very safe as it just turned into corners no mater how fast you where going!! Build quality was good also I would go for the fiesta

The mrs has a fiesta ecoboost 62 plate

Fab car!

More fun to drive around town than my ///m

I love it, it's pretty nippy too

Any new engine tends to throw up problems which get ironed out in a facelift and it's still very early days for the Ford 1.0 Ecoboost so I would instinctively avoid it for a bit. Plus we are on our second Mini and have found them some of the cheapest to own once depreciation, fuel and servicing etc are taken in to account. I Can't see much beating a Mini One D with TLC pack (fit the pepper pack for best outlay/resale/PCP values) and they are a nice little car, but the Fiesta will drive better.

This is the takeout from all these comments Pacemaker1000. If it was me, I'd leave it to be her choice otherwise you may end up regretting it in the long term - regardless of any negligible fuel economy comparison!

Both cars good but if she is looking at aesthetics and has a preference....

Let us know how you get on

As Inkeys says let her choose. I've taken 2 daughters from start of car ownership onwards and what they feel comfortable with and their image is the right car and if you 'force' the point they will hate it and always find fault.

Daughter 1 - marketing
Ka Ladybird (extrovert or what)
Cooper S x2 with full bodykits

Daughter 2 - lawyer in training
Ka Collection
BMW 1 series

Yes - a factory limited edition red Ka done up with various stripes and sized spots to look like a Ladybird.
I had to drive it from dealer in the South to Lichfield :(

I once bought my daughter a car ....... A few months later I asked how she was doing with it .....
Errrrrrrrrr, she sold it and party'd the cash

Get one of these

I would go for mini, the TLC is good value. Make sure u add a pepper pack or it will be hard to move on :).

MINI as always great to drive and will hold its value much better, however end of the day its simply too small, especially if carting friends around etc. I think the Fiesta would be the better alrounder day to day. Only thing that puts me off Fords are the dour interiors. I do like like Zetec S however in the blue :)

Tim.

I've owned a Mini Cooper S and loved it. We test drove a Fiesta when looking for a replacement for the 206 and neither daughter or SWMBO liked it.

Take the advice of letting her choose, otherwise the stress is immense! In the end we went for a Corsa 1.2 which they both love.

Still undecideded
Stopped pushing her though
Looks like colour is more important. Will have either if they are bright blue with black wheels
