Mini Cooper S (R56) Super Knocking

Anyone else experienced this?

I took our mini to the dealer and was told there is nothing wrong.

Charged me £100 for the experience and told me to fill up with a few tanks of Super.

It's been over 6 months since we took it in and it's still doing it. We have used super unleaded every fill up since taking it in.

After looking on line it seems like it's a fairly common issue with no known resolution.

Unacceptable isn't it !

Sometimes you wonder if we are going forwards or backwards in engineering terms

What do you mean by super knocking ??

I have done a few of these engines now, perhaps a bit more of a description ?

I'm guessing he's referring to pinking or tappety noise coming from the engine

Have you tried stp fuel injector cleaner or maybe a terraclean? :driving:

Cruising along you plant your foot, car hesitates then makes a metallic clicking noise before boosting.

Car is perfectly warmed up etc and it can happen randomly e.g when overtaking on the motorway.

I did make a couple of videos on my iPhone so I could show the dealer but I must have deleted them.

Yeah the dealer put some injector cleaner in and told me to user Super fuel. Still doing it

is it under any warranty? If yes, throw it back and dont accept it back until its gone. better still have them prove this is "normal" (if they are saying that) by doing a comparison in a similar car :)

It was under AUC warranty when I took it in. Now its got the insured warranty.

I thought I'd mention it when it was next in for a service.

These direct injection engines in the R56 are prone to coking issues. Dealers and indys are getting hold of walnut shell decoking machines to blast the hardened deposits which come from the crankcase breather. Since it's direct injection, no fuel or fuel additives pass through the valves to loosen it.

Take a look here http://www.lohen.co.uk/shop/proddetail.php?prod=LohenDeCokingService&cat=48

My AUC ran like a dog at idle after buying it, the dealers admitted it may have been filled with standard 95 unleaded which it should run on OK. I filled will a couple of tanks of Shell V power, gave it a good blast and after about 500 miles it's settled down and has been fine the last 2k miles. I find that any change of fuel seems to upset it even if it's another premium 98.

I had a R56 S before the Z with the exact same problem. Engine decoke solved it, got it done under warranty and it made the engine much more responsive. I believe the fuel pumps on these can cause issues too. Good luck!
