Mileage OCD

My 2004 3.0SE is going in this week for it's 2 year oil and brake fluid change - mileage is 29300 - while it's in I'm getting the drains checked - my plan is to use it more on a daily basis - I've had it over 2 years and covered only 600 miles

The idea is to overcome my OCD about keeping such a low mileage - I'm having the drains checked because God forbid I might even drive it in the rain sometimes

Put 13000 recreational miles on mine in 15 months - resigned myself to high mileage and stone chips - luckily I have the means and the time to get out there on the road as often as possible. Just had Inspection 2 done today and will keep the Zed well maintained - drives wonderfully. Bought at 53000 miles now at 66K and fully expecting this to rise just as quickly in the months and years ahead. The Zed seems up for it!

I wouldn't be able to own a low mileage example for long before it caught up with expected mileage! (Though I have had motorcycles in the past that only did a few 100 miles between MOTs!)

:driving:

Why do people have a car and not drive it? Do you just sit and look at it?

A car, especially a sports car, is for driving!!!! :fuelfire:

Threads on this forum about low mileage and values etc made me OCD too!!

Since getting back into the coupe after a winter lay up I realised I love the car too much not to enjoy it more - so like paulgs1000 I'll be putting on the miles and upping the maintenance on it!

Stone chips are the main pain

:driving:

Mines approaching 92000 soon and it drives better now then when i brought it with 24000, must admit i have replaced 90% of the suspension

I was doing 5/600 miles a week but luckily thats changed, get to enjoy it much more now :driving:

I dont get the Zed wet ( from the rain lol ) i dont drive it on wet roads or even its cloudy, i avoid motor ways at all costs even to the point of if i need to use them i wont take the Zed, i dont let anyone i dont know in my car, i put a seat cover a old mat and loads of black duck tape on the door kicks and base of seats when it gets any work done its then deep cleaned inside and out after, never drive unless i really want to keep her low milleage at 38k, there are strick rules to getting in my car even for a girl on a first date ( which now my OCD thats bad i dont use my Zed for first dates now just pretend i have a old focus only or it wouldnt lead to a 2nd date lol ), clean her everytime i drive it even if its a few miles, spend 90% of my spare cash on her until im happy, buy expensive cleaning products blah blah blah.....yes i think i have Zeditis :crazydude:

Clearly compared to you Jonny I'm a novice - we all use the term OCD far too easily and I reckon I do have a mild form of this with my zed . I remind myself at the end of the day it is only a car and life is too short to let it become an unhealthy obsession - if your car was a classic it would easily be described as concours from what I've seen - I would however urge you to enjoy it more for what it is -with your mileage and that you've had it from new you must have used it more in your earlier ownership - as I've said before I intend no offence just giving an opinion.

I agree, however some people spend more than that cars worth on a watch and just look at that.
If the mileage is kept that low it will start to increase in value to it being rare.
I say keep that with hardly any mileage and buy a hi mileage one to run every day .

Surely your enjoyment is about keeping something pristine and 'as new' then. If you hardly drive it and don't want to put miles on it what's the point. Even if you do this upgrade, will you use it then or will it still live a spotless life under a cover?

Forget the Zed and get something you can keep indoors and clean everyday and look at and admire. That way it's safe from the elements and protected. Some swarovski crystal animals perhaps... They glisten and shine.

I appreciate wanting to keep things nice and 'up together' but I don't get this. :scratchhead:

Oh and mine's just rolled over to 59,000 so I've given up on the mileage OCD now. Even if it had done 10,000 a year it should be on 80k by now so I've still got a few 'play miles' left to use up yet...

If you want something to love and care for
Spend most of your hard earned cash on
Worry about its condition and health.

Get a dog

The car is bits of metal and plastic ,yes it brings a smile to my face and I enjoy owning it.
But there is plenty more for sale and some of them better than the one I own.
Stop fretting about this one is mine syndrome ,plenty more fish in the sea.

This has been discussed a thousand times on here and will probably be discussed another thousand times.

Why do people own a car and not drive it ?

Your car maybe your only car (Daily Driver), so you have no option and may sell up after 12 / 24 months and move on.

My car for Eg is a hobby summer weekend car (a 3rd car) that gets pampered and driven when I want to drive it.

Unless circumstances change I'm quite likely to still have my car in 10 years time, I intend it to be in my possession long after

retirement and want it to be as good as poss and spend Time and money on it to keep it that way.

No different to keeping goldfish or any other hobby that floats your boat.

So you really need to know ( or perhaps it's non of your business ) the circumstances of the individual before you comment on

their car ownership.

Oh I also have 2 Dogs. :D

I can't wait to see how you're going to cope with the engine work. Your car WILL get marked during that amount of work. Every time my car is left in the hands of a garage, it seems to pick up a tiny nick somewhere, even for routine work. :x Perhaps you could bubble wrap everything apart from the engine bay? :D

Trust me with ALL the work ive had done no one has marked the inside and out, i make it VERY f***ing clear with them having to read between the lines a little that it may be just a Z4 and not a ferrari but its my car so any disrespect will see my fists of fury, or not pay what so ever for the work if there is any damage....so far so good so the same aplies to the engine work. I even applied this same behaviour when the guy fitted my bluetooth, poor sod was nervous afterwards but did it work....yes

Accidents happen.

Each to their own but cars, especially sports cars are built with design and spec to be enjoyed and driven.

I keep my car in as good a condition as I can afford/is reasonable considering the use it gets (about 10k miles per year). To be honest I do enjoy cleaning, waxing etc on a nice day and enjoy the end result. At the same time I also expect a few stone chips here and there and they no longer bother me as the good feeling I get from driving the car daily, far outweighs the bad feeling I get about wear and tear.

If you want it low mileage and pristine then thats fine, but I would never consider it to be an appreciating classic. Maybe in 20 years or so if its still as it is now, but looking at pristine Z3's now even with low miles they aren't going for any special money (unless its an ///M).

Get out and enjoy driving it while you can

Completely agree.
Years ago I had a 1989 FZR1000 Exup, I loved it and thought it must be the best in the country, it was nearly mint considering at the time it was about 12 years old when I bought it and almost 19 years old when I sold it. It was better condition when I sold it than when I bought it.
I joined a forum dedicated to these bikes and was amazed at how many of them were still running around in similar if not better condition than mine. It led me to realise that my bike was not a one off and never would be. The same goes for any vehicle, there will nearly always be a better one so stop worrying about every little nick and just keep it the best you can whilst enjoying it.
