Milage reading tampered.

This was taken recently:

I thought the milage was just too good. Then one day, I checked out the owners manual and found some MOT documents relating to previous registration number (BJ56CNA) and some milage readings.

Speedo milage was 31,834 miles back in 18th May 2009

When plugged into the diagnostic machine:

So the true milage is 41,200+++

What's done is done and will have a word with the importer on Monday.
Anyone know of the previous owner (BJ56CNA) or is he/she in this forum? Just like to know more about the vehicle history... :)

Bizarre that the tamper dot is not lit... I also wonder how it can show a different reading on the diagnostics to the display??? Could it have had a new engine?

A 2006 imported Z4 with just 7459 miles on the clock would have made me very curious. That's only 1500 miles per year.

Mileage is strored in several places to minimise tamper, so perhaps the diagnostic is reading from somewhere else, but does not explain as sp3ctre says how it has not tripped the tamper light. Still I assume that's easy enough to get around if you know waht you're doing. Even down to killing that indicidual dot on the display.

oes show the value in reading old docs before buying.

Phone BMW and check which warranty work has been carried out on the car. If you explain the circumstances I'm sure they'll oblige. It's probably had a new engine and they've clocked it to that mileage. Still, whatever the excuse it sucks. Sorry for you but a reminder to check the previous MOTs for mileage discrepancies as the others have said

I've never checked to see what info it throws up but allegedly you can check MoT history here if you have vehicle reg and MoT certificate number.....

Tells you the history but not if it has had a new engine etc. just the MOT dates and mileage.

Why would someone go to the trouble of tampering with the mileage, and the tamper light.....but then give you documents showing something different

?

But that should at least pin down the year of ownership when it was either replaced (or clocked) and hopefully tie up with the BMW history. All very important come resale time, the more info the better.

And what has it had for an MOT in the last year if last one ran out May 2010 ?

None of this makes any sense to me :|

i think i would just to cover my own back, then nobody can say it was me who clocked it

Unless a subsequent buyer did a simple google search on the registration number which would of course now bring them right here.

NO TAMPER LIGHT!!! WTF!!! :x :x :x

Erm, what is a "TAMPER LIGHT" and where does it show up? Is it some hidden function from the OBC?
Well, if it had a new engine then it would make up for this. haha
A bit skeptical about it because the engine number tallies with the UK documents. Maybe it had a new speedo and previous owner ran it for a while before selling? Are the speedos in the Z4 known to fail?

WOW, awesome. Wished my road & transport ministry would start doing this service. At the moment, the used car market is a sold as-is basis. Very disadvantage and zero consumer protection. Any dispute will have to involve lawyers & legal fees.

if its been clocked, should it be reported to police?

Not much point where he lives I suspect..... :(
Yes, that's sadly true.

I guess he didn't remember there were still some docs in the owners handbook case. The car was exported from UK around Nov-Dec 2010. A bit curious as to why there were no docs from May-Dec 2010.

Which emphasises the point even more. Why give the documents in the sale ?

Ok an MOT might be worth nothing in Malaysia, but presumably the dates and the mileage on them still mean the same there !
