Might of found a cheap 3.0, should I go for it?

Saw a car today in Asda car park (driven by a lady), I stuck a note on it asking if and when it comes up for sale to call me.
One hour later the owner called and said yes, selling very soon. It's his wife's car but they are changing to Mercedes. He tells me the only problem is the roof motor which is slow, he said he will have this fixed at the indy I recommended. Car is black on black with beige leather. 04 plate and 88k miles and Ellipsoid. With the roof fixed he wants £3500. I think this to be a bargain. He mentioned heated seats and parking sensor. I didn't ask to much for fear of appearing too keen.

Without seeing the pics i would say If all history checks out & it drives well then that would be a good buy even with a dicky roof motor

If it's got a service history and hpi clear sounds like a bargain
Have you got the registration number? If so do an MOT history check

Roof motor may come to life once drain holes are cleared , it may be swimming in water just waiting to expire
Once dried out you may get years longer out of it

As I understand the deal, he's getting a new motor fitted at my indy. He's paying for it and then I pay him £3500 total. They've had the car two years. BMW service history and then indys but up to date.

What does the indy garage do with the motor ? Is he relocating it to the boot or is he simply fitting a new one ?

How much does he want without a new motor ?
You could have the existing moter relocated to the boot by forum members tug or bowser, or this "dave" guy from this topic http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=84341
Dave`s price for relocating the motor is £120, there is probably nothing wrong with your motor.
You don`t need to replace it with a brand new one, it`s just "flooded"

might be worth offering him the 3.5k and seeing to the roof yourself.. still be a bargain and you could dry out and relocate the motor for just a few hundred pounds nowadays

Bit of a let down that. I know that feeling of someone thinking they are selling too low. I unfortunately made a deal to buy a car and less than 12 hours before I was due to pick it up I got some random excuse, when the real reason was they had been offered more from an Indy dealer.

I got my deposit back but was still left £200 out of pocket

Shame it's turned out this way but I'm not surprised - the offer was made without any real thought of how much the car is worth - it may be that when he took it in for repair he almost certainly told them what he was proposing to do and they in turn told him it's true worth.

Sounds like a good car so would still be worth asking him what he wants for the car either in it;s present state or repaired - you;ve nothing to lose by asking . Good luck in your search .
