Might be the end of the Z4 for me...

My last car was an 06 Mustang GT (mildly modded to 12.5 sec 1/4 mile) and I loved it. I auto x'd it a number of times and kept up with the ZO6's and WRX's just fine.
I love my Zed too. Two totally different cars so a comparison isn't really fair to either car.
I currently have two Fox body verts (91 & a 92) that I'm putting back into shape as more or less a hobby and they pale by comparison to any late model Mustang in all departments (the 5.0l is pretty quick but not compared to the 06 3 valve 4.6l).
The Cobras are great cars and an absolute blast to drive. :driving: Mod the suspension a bit and yes, they handle very well indeed!
In fact, the Bob Bondurant racing schools used the Mustang SVT Cobra for years so they can't be all that bad now can they?
Just my opinion but buy and drive what you want! It's your car.

I would never do it... Mustang??? Come on!
You're stepping down here...M3 I can see that but Mustangs = poop...
Put some money into Z4 and you'll get the better car.

cobras are sick, everytime I see a modded 99-04 gt or cobra pass by I always want one. If you get one post pics. Are you going to mod it?

I guess i really can't be too suprised that BMW owners look down on a Mustang Cobra, if i were a v6 stang, i guess i could understand to a degree... Not suprisingly its done with lack of knowledge of the car and its attributes, with a couple of mods, it can produce 400+whp and suspension mods are cheap and easy to install.

Don't get me wrong, BMW's are great cars, but the Z4 is not the end all be all... After having it for a while, i would rather have back my SRT6 Crossfire, which is a 2 seater, than the Z4... Compared between the 2... The SRT6 is more powerful (330hp vs 235hp), the SRT6 handles as well as the Z4, the styling is almost even, but thats completely subjective. With the SRT6 actually having mods available.

I'm still debating on what to get, between the Cobra or a M3... I even looked at a couple Lexus IS cars, but those are more of looking out of curiosity

That M3 would eat a Mustang's lunch

Cobra? eh

Why not a Saleen, or a Roush or a Shelby King Cobra. Then you'd be talking!

If I had to pick between a Saleen or Roush, it would be a Roush.

Overpiced, but the Roush really does a number on the suspension components.

I've said it before and i'll say it again.... 95% of people here have not and won't take their cars to a track to even know the cornering capabilites of a car.... So a arguement like "in the twisties" just simply doesn't apply since they will never be put to the test... in the real world, the differences are negliable...

Now, I know that you can drop money into a M3 to get great performance... how much to get monster numbers? i don't know... but i do know that my buddy just picked up a 650whp Cobra for $26k a month ago... Took it to the track 2 weeks later and ran 11's @ 132mph which is more of a mid to low 10 second pass.

I wouldn't call "track" a 1/4 mile long straight strip of asphalt. Tell your buddy to time a ride up Molholland Hwy.

If this if what you're looking for in a car not only the Z4 but every BMW is the wrong car for you.

I think Clarkson hit it spot on when he said the Crossfire looks like a dog ready to drop a deuce, that car is terrible  . The Cobra is definitely a manlier car than the Z4, minus the M, Id say the Z4 is more of a hairdressers car. The problem with the non-M Z4s are - low on aftermarket support :x , electronic steering, weak engines, no LSD. At least its pretty, which I think may be the only thing it has going for it. The lack of aftermarket goodies is really the most boring part about this car. Just by browsing the forums Id much rather have bought an E39M5 or the new 335i. A prime comparison would be the Honda S2K, which has LOADS of performance parts.

Like OP said, many of the drivers here (myself included) will never see the limits of handling on any of these cars, so the comparisons should be kept real world. You are more likely to accelerate onto an on ramp than go through a slalom. A good amount of muscle is much more fun those situations than a car with "great handling" (not that great, stock)

I don't think the 3.0si is a week engine for real world driving myself! :?

Actually in the UK your not! This is the problem talking horsepower, engines and handling in cars on a forum as we all drive on different roads around the World!

And it's no good having 500BHP if you can't corner with the car (unless your day is full of 4 lane US freeways of course!!)

Top Gear test on the Mustang Cobra:

Now I personally like the Mustang Cobra but I wouldn't own one to drive on UK roads! I'd be caved up by Ford Fiesta ST's leaving me for dead on our roads! And as for all those hairdressers in their Z4's, all I would smell would be their hair products as they passed me!! :fuelfire:

I personally don't understand what we are discussing here?
When it comes to cars it is always a question of personal taste.
Z4 has a special place for me to tell the truth I am not sure why? of couse I would have wanted a Z4 wth more power and a LSD.. Than again they did not have Mz4 back in 2003.

No discussion left here. Just a bunch of Prima Donnas bashing a guy because he happens to like cars other than BMW's and models other than the Z4.

This forum seems to be turning into an "I hate anything that's not BMW and anyone that doesn't share my opinions" club.

Which means I'm the next one to get bashed for challenging the current dogma here.

I've had enough of this crap, I'm out of here.
