Midland track day recommendation

Hi all,

It was my 40th birthday yesterday and in the run up, I poo-pooed pretty much every suggestion from SWMBO about various things to do to celebrate. The closest I came to agreeing was to a Supercar track day - but I pointed out that my car was probably as quick! Anyway I've wanted to do a track day for a while but don't know either a decent local track or the format.

Does anyone know a decent place I can check out which is fairly local and won't overcrowd the track? Was thinking about a weekend in November or December so if anyone is free and fancies showing me the ropes, then I'd appreciate it.

Bedford autodrome is fantastic for a beginner, lots of runoff area to make you feel safe, I'd go for that although not strictly midlands I guess.

Donno (Donnington Park)

I've got a 'vs' voucher, haven't booked yet but I'll be going for the Ferrari 360 vs the Single Seater, hoping the SS will be a totally different experience and you don't have an instructor sat next to you:

Out of Rockingham, Mallory Park and Donno I think the latter is the better track...

Oulton Park is probably as close as Donington or Silverstone, and probably cheaper (and arguably better, but I'm biased as it's my local track for trackdays & marshalling).

However, if you want to make a weekend of it, then consider Anglesey Circuit/Trac Mon(specifically the Coastal circuit which includes the 'corkscrew' a la Laguna Seca), which is relatively new in it's current format, and has some of the best scenery around. I say weekend, as it's a bit of a trek and you may want to take advantage of the Welsh roads on the way over, rather than going the boring motorway route.
