microswitch roof shell 2 closed left

I have just had my roof stop working on me mid opening. It’s essentially in service mode. I’ve heard it’s a fairly common thing. I have had a look and can’t see anything obvious damage wise to the loom. I can’t see the connectors for some reason.
I’m based in the southwest of England. Near Bristol. If anyone in this area knows or can repair it in situe that would be great!

What does the BMW specfic fault code reader say?

What does the BMW specfic fault code reader say?

The specific code that the code reader read

“microswitch roof shell 2 closed left”

Actual code number eg A624?

Thanks, yeah I can’t see any breaks at all, it seems very neat and tidy. One of the looms wrap has come unwrapped though but even under this there is no noticeable damage

So I have done some moving of cables and clipped some back in. I tried the rod and the motor actually kicked in and it has shut a bit more. However, nothing is latched and when you try to close or open it the back shell ‘bounces’
I’m thinking it is confused as to what state the roof is in. I thought maybe if I could get the codes cleared then it may reset itself

It isn't 'confused' as such, as it doesn't have a brain (but think I know what you mean).
Clearing any codes won't make it work again. If the fault is there it will just come back up until the 'fault' is rectified (that is the point of self-diagnostics).

The roof sequence is actually a very simple 'series' electrical circuit (albeit a very complex simple series electrical circuit) which powers various mechanical parts.

Something is broken:
It's either a microswitch, a hall sensor, a wire (or several), the hydraulic pump, or the (unlikely) roof control module. The difficult bit is finding out which (this is where the car diagnostics and reading them come in handy).

HTH

Well if you know it's the left, strip back all the sheathing and check wires as first job.
Even gently tugging on them will reveal broken one.

It would be interesting to see when you guys start recommending to generally remove the rear roof shell and properly repair all 3x2 wires on both sides without cutting up any of the fabric coverings.

That would be a proper renovation. Everything else is only short-term.

  • Roof shell removed
    E89-1.jpg

  • Typically broken hydraulic hoses on ALL E89 independant of the production year
    E89-2.jpg

  • Taped hydraulic hose to stabilize it's outer structure
    E89-3.jpg

  • Finished hydraulic hose with a 2nd fabric
    E89-4.jpg

Btw, next level is, that the wires will break in the inner bow below the rear roof shell2. It will hit each E89 as well, sooner or later.
