Microswitch/Hall sensor problem: how difficult?

Hi all,

in the last 3-4 weeks my 2.0i developed an issue with the roof: at random times the car would signal a roof malfunction (classic "dong") and red indicator on the dashboard.
I've diagnosed with Carly, I'm attaching the fault codes. I've found and read a few posts (https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=113223 and http://www.eastpazscca.org/downloads/forum-5.pdf), I think it is the same type of problem but I'm not sure that that's the case. I also found this link:

which seems to suggest it is indeed the problem.
Would anyone be able to confirm this is the case? How easy is it to fix?

Hi, i think the links you’ve posted (particularly the first one) explain pretty well how easy it is to fix-the biggest issue is the price, bmw increased the cost of the hall sensors to around £150 i believe? :x

Go for the simple things first, try replacing the two motor relays, they are a cheap fix.
The hall switches should be very robust, reason for there use.
Check wiring to switches first.
My Foxwell code reader said there were 5 odd faulty switches, when non were faulty.
The article refers to a hall switch, but it could just be a bad contact at the (white in the article, you might find it's black) connector, check that first.
Replacing the hall switch might just be coincidence, because the switches don't have the connector.

I had this exact problem. Ultimately, I discovered that the hall sensors were working just fine and that it was indicative of a much larger problem. That was the incomplete closure of my roof. This was traced to a flooded trunk and a hydro motor that was going bad. Had to have the motor rebuilt. Fixed the leaking issue. Now the roof opens and closes as it should and my sensors are once again happy.

Scary. I've received the relays a couple of weeks ago. Installed them and deleted the fault memory with rheingold. Everything seemed OK for a couple of weeks. Now I'm back at square one. Seems more complicated than I hoped it was.
