Michelin PS5

I'll be replacing my rear tyres in the not too distant future and Michelin have apparently just released their new Pilot Sport 5 tyres claiming they offer better grip and are longer lasting. Brilliant, I like those things, please take my money.

The thing is, I can only seem to find them in XL sizes, i.e. with a massive sidewall for SUVs. Has anyone heard/read about lower profile sizes that would fit a Z being released in future?

It's not an XL (extra large) tyre, it's just an XL (extra load) tyre...and you'll find most of the performance tyres are the same. It's only lower than specified that you've really got to worry about (e.g. putting an 83H on instead of a 89Y, a 95/99Y/XL won't be an issue).

Have a look at the PS4 or Goodyear Supersport and they'll say the same...mainly because cars are getting ever-heavier.

The only downside is they might give a slightly harsher ride and transmit a little more NVH...but that also means the response might be a little better.

Thank you for clarifying the XL. Unfortunately they are only offering sizes with very large profile, e.g. 275/45/19, whereas with a 275 I would need 275/30/19. Although I misunderstood the XL, they are definitely only offering sizes that would have no chance of fitting a Z4 due to the profile.

To be honest, I doubt I could tell much difference between the comparable Michelin/Conti/Goodyears etc, I'm happy to admit that I'm no racing driver

It will take a while for production going in all the sizes and a bit further for the discounts to appear..

But as tiglon said, all these tyres far exceed most of our abilities and once you start trying to find the limit of these tyres on public roads you are in DD conviction territory / very big accident land.. :tumbleweed:

ContactSport 7 is the winner there.

Michelin PS5 has now been released in a few more sizes, but still nothing that works for me. Since the PS4 is not available in my size either, it might be that only the PS5S will be, whenever that appears. The closest PS5 to the size I need is over £250, so it's possible that the required PS5S will be pushing £300 if/when released :?

If I don't want to wait for a new Michelin that might never happen and might cost £300, I can stick with the PS4S at £240 each, or go for the ContactSport 7 with 10% off which are therefore just £170.

Seems like a no-brainer, doesn't it?

SARS posted I think on the G29 section about this...it will take time as you say for both production to fill out the range and volume to bring prices down a bit.

On oversize wheels I couldn't find a fitment in PS4s so went with P4Ss..as is referenced in the write up they perform very well, but the feel and feedback is lacking IMHO compared to the Contis and the Assy 5s

We'll have to wait for the shoot out between the Conti Sports 7, Michelin PS5(s) and Goodyear Assy 6..

There older cousins are great tyres so you can't go wrong with any of them..for me I've always found Contis went well with Z4s..had 4 different versions and all were good..

I'll certainly give the new Conti 7 a shot on my next tyre rotation on the 35is..probably just after Easter at the rate they are wearing.. :driving: :tumbleweed: :rofl:

Oh no more choices. I'm sure they will be great on all the Z4's, though I am disappointed with the rear grip from MPS4 compared to the old MPSS tyres. But I think I am in a minority there.

Doubt it, the MPSS was/is a superior tyre to a MPS4, it is constructed similarly and is far more comparable to the MPS4S, but those are sadly unavailable in 18" M sizes like the SS was.

I personally prefer the MPS4 on the 370Z in comparison to the MPSS on the M4. The MPSS are an old tech tyre now for me.

Maybe the MPS4S would suit you better perhaps?
