MHD Tuning

Thinking of using this tune on my car but want to know if any one on here has used it on stock car? I know you need to use android device but wanting to know what the best one to use as I have all Apple stuff, would be great to find out what works , thanks

I've been using MHD since the initial beta phase and had no issues. I don't use the built in maps as I create my own tune so can't really comment on those.

If you want to know about compatibility with android devices then E90post has had this discussed plenty. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1145635

My personal feeling is that the ebay seller cable-shack is the best place to buy the DCAN cable from. Tried and tested by many and I've used the cable for INPA/ISTA/MHD/Carly and it works flawlessly.
For an android device it really depends on what you want to use it for. If you just want it for occasional use for applying and removing the tune then go as cheap as possible. If you want to use it for gauges in the car as a semi-permanent addition then get a quality device.

Since I'm an android user I just use my LG G4 phone for MHD. You should just make the swap over to android, it's miles ahead of iOS.
I use both side-by-side as my work phone is an iPhone and I can't think of a single thing the iPhone does better!

I've not tuned (yet) as I'm waiting to do the stage 1 upgrades first, fast road pads, FMIC, BMS twin cone intake and charge pipe upgrade.

But I've used it for data logging and it's great.

If you want to use your phone as a gauge cluster then invest in a brodit clip and a Brodit universal phone holder - then get a cheap Chinese phone (like a oneplus) - make sure your devices support OTG.

You also need a battery charger and make sure whatever you do, always ensure the device is in airplane mode. The battery must be >11v at all times otherwise the DME will turn off and you can brick it. Otherwise it's very safe and tried and tested.

Search for Ken@Wedge performance - he can provide you with a custom tune for $200. You install the base map, do a road dyno/logging session, send him your data - he'll adjust the base map according to your car, install, try again + repeat. You then end up with a tune specific for your car.

I am a little bit sceptical about doing it as I will more than likely do something wrong :?

Me too, I'm taking my car to my trusty tuning shop where they will hook up the battery charger and oversee everything - because knowing me, I'll break something. I'm sure it will be fine, but just in case, it can stay there

I've done over 100 writes to the car and not used a charger once. Most don't!

Even used an OpenFlash Tablet before MHD came along and that thing took 60min for the initial read and the voltage barely shifted. And that was with the fuel pump running the entire time. Since your car is brand spankers the battery will be pretty good.

I don't ever put the device into flight mode either. Just to test it I've made a call and browsed facebook while writing to the car, the app just continues on in the background. I currently have the luxury of another car for my daily duties so the Z is a toy until the weather improves. So if I do balls it up I have time to fix it myself without needing to use public transport.

I'm not suggesting you do any of that, but it just shows that it's actually quite a foolproof system and you won't mess things up just by sneezing near your phone!

The DME is actually incredibly hard to brick. There's been very few cases of people actually properly bricking their DME and those were quite exceptional and done using some really rough software called BimmerBoostFlash. Most cases you can just re-flash and it will fix everything.

Good to know

Well bit the bullet and done the flash... Found an android HTC one in the draw so up dated it and I'd also supported otg.... Then down loaded the app, great... There was a guy local to me who had the cables and offered to help me, so a little trip to see him.. Plugged in the phone down loaded the flash and the map I wanted, put the battery charger on and off it went.
Took approx 35 mins to do was a bit shocked at all the errors coming up in the I drive, but once it was fully flashed it removed the error codes... Thank god :)
Only had a little drive of it but it feels so much smoother and pulls a lot stronger , don't know what bhp it is putting out but it feels a lot faster.. So pleased I did it now, just need to order my own set of cables and then a few more mods

Can I be cheeky and ask the cost :)
Android phone that supports otg... £0 it was an old one in the draw
MHD flasher in staller £70
MHD Map 1 flash £30
OTG to USB & D can cables £35
The time it takes was about 35 mins , so best to put car on charger while doing it
It has made a hell of a difference, the cars was fast anyway but it pulls much better and gear changes seem smoother

Thank you  That's very tempting

Well when you think it is the cheapest way to flash the car that is on the market, and you can put back to standard when ever you want... Once the flash drive is connected to the car you have a choice of in app purchases so if you add mods you can buy another map to suit , or you can even take logs and send it to them then they will make it a bespoke tune to your car... Could not believe how smooth the car felt afterwards.

It is so easy to do you will be amazed at how easy it is... Just nerve racking seeing all the faults on the I drive  but they get wiped clear after the install is finished .... You need to do it :poke:
