But I've used it for data logging and it's great.
If you want to use your phone as a gauge cluster then invest in a brodit clip and a Brodit universal phone holder - then get a cheap Chinese phone (like a oneplus) - make sure your devices support OTG.
You also need a battery charger and make sure whatever you do, always ensure the device is in airplane mode. The battery must be >11v at all times otherwise the DME will turn off and you can brick it. Otherwise it's very safe and tried and tested.
Search for Ken@Wedge performance - he can provide you with a custom tune for $200. You install the base map, do a road dyno/logging session, send him your data - he'll adjust the base map according to your car, install, try again + repeat. You then end up with a tune specific for your car.![]()

Even used an OpenFlash Tablet before MHD came along and that thing took 60min for the initial read and the voltage barely shifted. And that was with the fuel pump running the entire time. Since your car is brand spankers the battery will be pretty good.
I don't ever put the device into flight mode either. Just to test it I've made a call and browsed facebook while writing to the car, the app just continues on in the background. I currently have the luxury of another car for my daily duties so the Z is a toy until the weather improves. So if I do balls it up I have time to fix it myself without needing to use public transport.
I'm not suggesting you do any of that, but it just shows that it's actually quite a foolproof system and you won't mess things up just by sneezing near your phone!
The DME is actually incredibly hard to brick. There's been very few cases of people actually properly bricking their DME and those were quite exceptional and done using some really rough software called BimmerBoostFlash. Most cases you can just re-flash and it will fix everything.

It has made a hell of a difference, the cars was fast anyway but it pulls much better and gear changes seem smoother
It is so easy to do you will be amazed at how easy it is... Just nerve racking seeing all the faults on the I drivestuartinzg said:Me too, I'm taking my car to my trusty tuning shop where they will hook up the battery charger and oversee everything - because knowing me, I'll break something. I'm sure it will be fine, but just in case, it can stay there![]()
