MFSW with Paddle Shift - A brief Project Write up

Hi Midhurstman.

Excellent job  I have done all the wiring and changed the slip ring and it's works when I ground each wire, but I also have the SMG paddles so does not work  Please can you post some pictures of your handy work so I can copy what you have done. Many thanks

Hi. As I haven't uploaded any photos before and not yet registered for photobucket it would be easier to email you directly and include some written description for each photo. I will edit the photos, take a couple more if necessary and email through to you by tomorrow PM latest. Good luck, hope it works for you

ps I'm fairly sure mine are the SSG paddles (silver plastic-no markings), but not sure if they are wired the same as early SMG paddles. I would advise you to check yours against the photos that I send and make sure it definitely is your paddles causing the problem. I assume later paddles are the required simple make and break to earth otherwise so many Z4 M sport steering wheels with paddles would not have worked in the many retrofits reported following cj10 jeepers revolutionary guidelines

Hi, merry xmas to all....
I have modified my steering wheel with paddle shifter.
Thank you for cj10jeeper, midgurstman and hosse sharing all information.

Thanks again.

Hi everyone! I'm looking this topic for a few months and I finally ordered an smg steering wheel ( from an 06 bmw Z4) for my 03 bmw Z4.
I'm very interested in the photo that you took Midhurstman. Especially about the pcb that you welded in the steering wheel. Do you still have these photos?
Thanks a lot!
Have a good day.

hello old topic but...
I bought new steering wheels with MF and paddle shifters i dont really understand manual there are here from my side is combination MF and PS i mean...

1) for paddle shifters a need only connection for 2 wires to steering wheel then i need connected to AT gear shift am i right ?

For this reason, here is the retrofit complete harness.
My understanding is i only will disconnected by from AT 2 purple coneectors and then i will insert this harness (below) and the last step is connected 2 wires to the steering wheels ?

The answer is yes

Remove gear knob, remove gear selector surround and you will see the purple connector. To help feeding the wire up to steering wheel remove the panel below fan heater controls and also the ash tray assembly. You may need a slip new slip ring if you don't have the pins for the paddle shift.

Yes link is correct, but i worte email to burgertuning if is the same also for Z4.
I dont see any schema how and what i have to soldering. First slide here is only connect so and so, but i don see haw many wires and how and where.

Anybody tried it to connect paddle shiftersf with sport button ? Then i think is possibility to do it and maybe then is whitout moving AT Knob to the left side

[ref]Zedebee[/ref] if you wanted to make up your own cable then you will need these connectors:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20441849...LgKxZUWWYZrBhqS+oYKl4hmRAS|tkp:Bk9SR8b3sM6YYw

You could also try modifying this cable:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/37455388...r%2BGMPLw09bH%2BA%3D|ampid:PL_CLK|clp:2332490

Bear in mind those blue connectors are likely expensive from BMW and the male and female pins for the connectors are around £1 from BMW. I have found that none BMW pins don't fit in BMW connectors even though they are sold as such.

The cable you have bought from burger tuning is the correct cable and will work

However here in the UK Z4's are worth peanuts compared to in the States so we would find it hard to justify spending $100 on a cable if we can make one ourselves for $20.

I’ve done this already, I just thought the ready made cable harness was really neat as I had to cobble mine together.
