MFSW retro-fit

I need a little help!

I am about to embark upon the retrofit of a MFSW kit. I have the BMW instructions as per the How-to section instructions. I understand what I am going to do with everything but the cable labelled 'H'. The instructions say one end attaches to the 'light switch centre' and the other to the 'steering wheel slip ring'. Unfortunately, the diagram is less than clear where these are (to me anyway). Did anyone taken any pictures when they did their fitting?

Can anyone point me in the right direction before I embark upon this project?

Thanks in advance,
Richard

Richard - frankly the answer is 'no' as taking photos in those locations would be so difficult and not really help much. The retrofit instructions are really clear and identify the connectors by number, wire colour and pin.

You need to get to 2 separate components the LCM module, after removal of the gauge pod and splice into the 2 named wires, then the back of the slip ring and identify to the 2 correct pin connectors in that socket. Section 3 of the instructions gives exact details on the pin and connector by number and section 5 accurate drawings of those connectors.

Sorry - that's probably the wrong answer, but I and several others have done it straight from the retrofit instuctions.

Pull it to bits in the morning and I'm sure it will make sense

Thanks CJ. You are probably right.

I can see from the diagrams what to do, but it is where these places are in the car! I am guessing the slip ring is behind the steering wheel or underneath?

When you say the 'guage pod', is this the speedo and rev counter etc?

Sorry, I know I am being a muppet.

Rich,

Slip ring, mount, (call it wahtever) Remove the lower cowl and you can see the connector on the back of it.

Instrument binnacle. Undo 1 torx on the top underside and wriggle it out towards the wheel. You can see the back of the LCM (light switch) and the big connector is on that

Remember battery disconnected 15 mins before starting and off until the airbag is back in.

Hope that helps

Well, after a fair bit of faffing , the MFSW controls are fitted and working a treat!

As you said Cj, once everything was apart, it made sense. The hardest part is splicing into the LCM module, very fiddly. Thanks for your advice.

Glad it worked out. Sometimes you just have to dive in and take a look and after a bit of head scratching it makes sense.

The hardest part I find on these projects is identifying the correct pin number on connectors. Although printed on the end of all plugs they are usually upside down and in a dark corner with micro font. On some with 20 or 30 wires they have more than one the same or very similar colours, just to confuse
