MFSW - How to remove Controls?

I'm looking to remove the MFSW controls for refurbishment. Can anybody advise if they can be disconnected from the switches or if I need to remove the wheel to get to the wires.

I know the spokes are removed by undoing the single screw on the back of each one but not sure on the MFSW controls.

That's fantastic srhutch, thanks - at the end of the thread it tells you how to get the paddles off   :D

No need for steering wheel removal, woohoo ... But the airbag needs to come out - I'll have a wee search how to do this, but IIRC you have to disconnect the battery first to avoid the dreaded airbag light. Is this correct ? :?

FYI, it also prevents the airbag deploying by accident ;)

Yep, that's what figured... Is the steering wheel cover easy to get off ? Just a couple of clips I guess ?

There is a guide how to fit mfsw on the forum somewhere, removal of air bag ect. Im 99% positive the buttons can be unplugged from behinde once you take the spokes off as i retro fitted them on my car. Very easy job just take your time and dont pull none of the wires behinde that airbag to hard. I got silver as it matched my dash but as mentioned the bottom spoke does not quite fit 100%.Around £140 for the lot.

Far from.

What I have discovered though is although I have removed the spokes without removing the airbag I'm going to have to remove it to refit otherwise there is risk of damage.

 -go steady mate!

Don't worry Andy I'll leave it 30 mins before touching anything after disconnecting the battery.

Question is how long would you wait

Airbag isn't too difficult to remove. Disconnect battery, make and drink cup of tea, stick tent peg in hole at rear and push hard, repeat on other side and bob's your uncle - disconnect two wires (tricky little blighted those connectors) and it falls in your lap.

I am about to order my plastidip, almost got all the help I need

Repeat of question above though - how do you get the cover over the airbag off ?

Don't understand what you mean bing. The whole 'cereal bowl' shaped bit with the BMW badge on in the centre of the wheel removes as one unit. You wouldn't know it was an airbag it feels just like a weighty lump of metal.

Pm me with you phone number if you want to talk it through.

Ahh, NOW I get it. For some reason I thought the cereal bowl came off and left the airbag in place. Makes total sense now, and I know the holes you are talking about

Thanks Guiseley - when I get my plastidip you may still get a PM. Hopefully not to be followed by a phone call that goes something like 'mwear thdo I nget a newth airbath fom ?' :D

Bing you are cracking me up today! :)

Andy

You think I am joking though, but every time I fix something on my Z I seem to break something else
