Being a bit of a hifi nerd (i know, i know cue the jokes..) ive always generally upgraded my vehicles stereo to try and get something acceptable. So considering the age of the Z4's im looking at, i would probably be looking to swap out the OEM unit at the very least for DAB although bluetooth connectivity is obviously useful these days as well.

But, if i buy a car with the fancy steering wheel, will the buttons be able to work with any after market head units or does it become redundant? Any clever guys been able to reprogram/connect the wheel?

I don't think you can re-program the wheel for BT functions but it's not the end of the world.
If you're on Android just get yourself a 'Bluetooth Home button' and place it in any convenient location. Works great.
See if you can spot mine...
Clue: I work it with my left hand. lol

Halfords, and other places I’m sure, do an additional loom/module that allows you retain the MFSW controls

Something LIKE this. I haven’t picked a specific model and understand there’s different ones for different models/stereos so you’d need to look into it. I have the relevant one in my E90 with a Kenwood DAB

ahh, that looks interesting. Im not entirely sure what functions id necessarily want to put on the wheel but if the option exists....

I installed a pioneer head unit and got the additional wiring to support the mfsw.
This does work with BT but do your research as not all manufacturers support it.
