Meyle HD and insurance

Hi guys

After a not very clear conversation with my insurer, I’m confused as to whether Meyle HD bushings would be treated as ‘notifiable’ for insurance purposes? Presume if I were to fit eg RTAB limiters, that would be notifiable. I think I’m clear that Bilstein b4s are not notifiable as classed as an oem replacement.

Grateful for your views! Haven’t made any changes to the car yet but just trying to clarify a few things before I start.

No, they are OEM parts made to the original manufacturers spec. That's like saying you'd have to notify them if you replaced your brake pads with Brembo made ones.

Insurers are generally idiots. A bushing is a bushing, poly/rubber/whatever. B4 are OE equivalent just a different brand, if you went B6/8 then it would be worth telling them, not that they would understand.

Thanks guys. Seems you’re pretty relaxed on it.

Any views on Meyle HD vs OEM parts? Don’t really want to go down the poly bush route.

Question is, ignoring bolx on forums and blokes down the pub, in your motoring lifetime do you KNOW anybody that's had an insurance claim knocked back because of anything fitted to their car, let alone something like this?

Back in 2014, I crashed my pickup truck. It was a cat d total loss, so was obviously inspected.

The truck had a remap, a de cat pipe fitted, egr blanked off, wider tyres than standard but they paid full market value and never mentioned about any mods.

An insurer might try but there's no legitimate way to refuse a payout based on equivalent aftermarket parts, unless they were the cause. Upgrades are a different matter.

On my first car, i fitted some different alloys.

Car was involved in a total loss accident where the other party (an idiot van driver) was at fault.

But before he admitted fault, my insurance were dealing with the claim out of their own pocket.

They said i had to pay extra to add the alloys onto my policy as a modification before they would pay out. I was young and didn't really understand insurance and mod's, so i paid it and they settled the claim.

Unsure whether they would invalidate your policy if the accident was deemed to be your fault. I suspect they'd pay out and then maybe try and claim the costs back through the courts.

Meyle HD seem good quality. I have their droplinks on the front and back of my Z4. Much better than the previous ebay parts that lasted 12 months before they were finished :headbang:

So yeah, well worth paying the extra for Meyle.

Why not go for polybushes? My arb's, rtab's and lollypops all have superpro/powerflex polybushes and the ride seems ok.

Thanks for your thoughts Ben - appreciated.

I’m trying to keep the car unmodified for insurance purposes for the time being, as the quotes I’ve had for modified suspension are so much higher than what I’ve been able to get for the standard car (mirrored no claims bonus from my other car policy). Want to get a few years no claims built up on this car policy before doing too many mods (this car is a keeper so I have time). I’m working on the principle that with fresh components and quality alignment I should be able to get very good road performance for the car (I won’t be tracking it).

I told my insurers when I polybushed, fitted a b12 and put on runflats on just because i don't trust the industry and I didn't want them to try to wangle out of paying if i smashed it: All they wanted to know was how much this lowered the car by (~15mm), this was fine but they just stated they would only cover for the cost of OEM replacements in the event of a crash.

phone your insurer and ask. if you don't like the answer change insurer - i think i was with esure and now with admiral on a multicar - no issue with either.

Just got Meyle HD wishbones and droplinks fitted to the front of my zed - all good so far! The parts seem well made and have certainly sorted out the front end wandering....
