Metallic rattle noise E85

Hello

I have a metallic rattle noise coming underneath from my E85 3.0 which I only hear with the windows or roof down and I want to get it fixed before the good weather comes! (If it ever does!)

I think it may be the exhaust, When the exhaust pipe is knocked vertically on the tips it makes what I think is the same noise i can hear when driving. It doesn’t make the noise when the pipe is rattled horizontally.

I do have a video of the rattle when knocking the exhaust but I don’t know how to upload it? 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

Iv check the heat shields best I could when I jacked it up and didn’t notice anything.

Strangely the rattle doesn’t appear when driving over bumps it’s more when the car vibrates from acceleration or slowing down.

Is the exhaust rattle in the video normal?

Has anyone experienced a similar issue and if so what’s the fix?

Many thanks
Arthur

Could be a missing anti-rattle clip on your brake caliper.

If you're missing one I have a spare I'll happily send you

Could be the bolts that hold the exhaust to the manifold, under the drivers feet area, have corroded away and the exhaust support bracket is rattling or a heat shield further down the system.
Get it on some ramps and have a look.

My moneys on this

So I changed the rear brake pads and discs today so whilst I had it on axle stands I slid underneath and managed to fix some heat shield fixing with some washers but unfortunately this didn’t solve the issue.

I might still try to get it on a ramp tomorrow to check the other shields!

Last time I had a metal rattle sound I hadn't refitted the anti-rattle clips on the calipers correctly; worth double checking them all. They should all be tight; I had replaced my rear brakes and refitted mine incorrectly; they were only loosely clipped in.

The Zed went on a ramp this morning and I think I found the issue!

A bracket on the exhaust was rattling against the rusted exhaust bolt, I bent it out the way and after a little test drive... no more rattle!

Yep that was what my money was on. Mine has come away too. I’m building up to finally cut the corroded bolts out of mine so I can swap out the exhaust.

I’m hoping mine stays together with all the rust and the 1 out of 4 bolts it has 🤦🏻‍♂️😂👍

You are probably right, How would I go about fixing it? The bolts are so rusty id never manage to get new nuts on there.

Had one completely come apart on my 3.0i a while ago. My mechanic fixed it with something like the attached. Seems to be pretty permanent...51AG2NxNghL.jpg

I had the bolts drilled out and replaced on all 3 occasions

I assume thats a bit of a pain in the ass job to do?
Yes ,Many drill bits had to die,
I personally didnt do the job,but was reminded what a pitta it is by the guys that did.
Although aficr it wasnt an expensive fix,far cheaper than waiting until you are dragging the exhaust down the road.
Its not a job i would want to take on layed on my back under axle stands.
Better left to someone with a lift
