Metal sheet/guard located underneath the car

Hi All

I noticed yesterday when looking under the front of my car that here is a metal sheet/guard located underneath the car under the engine which seems to be corroding and is a bit lose at one point.

Has anyone any idea what the implications of this may have on the car and also what prices are to fix/replace?

By the way, what is this part actually called?

Ok but I have no idea what the part is and my main worry was the impact of its condition

If its under the engine and extends from the rear wishbone mounts to the plastic bit in front of the bumper its called;
7012723 Engine compartment screening, no price.

On my 2.5 its an aluminium panel held on by 4 bolts. Its an aerodynamic/ sump guard.

No issues if you remove it. Jack the car up and check all the bolts are there first before you spend money. 1 in each corner if I remember right.

Scotty 597 is right, but there are actually 8 bolts (On a 3.0 facelift at least), they are torque yield bolts I.E one use only, idea being if you have a big front end smash they shear off and allow the crumple zones absorb the impact. Chances are the undertray has been removed to replace the "lollipop" TCA bushes (V common on Z's) and either sheared off trying to re torque used bolts or missed off all together, either way it shouldn't be loose.

Thanks for the help guys it's put my mind at ease a bit. So it's called the under tray and if I am correct it is not a major thing to worry about unless it was actually hanging off?

Didn't someone have an issue with the undertray coming off when the upgraded to an ///M front bumper? Seem to remember a post about that, so if its loose either fix or remove - personally I would fix as it does offer a degree of protection (and stops water/muck ingress into the engine bay)
 
I now currently have no undertray as the other literally fell off. Will it cause my car any damage if I use it without the undertray ?

I think the OP is talking about part number 1 in this diagram ?

It's the suspension reinforcement plate, and you do need one - it protects the sump and other parts of the engine, as well as providing...well, reinforcement for the suspension :D

I replaced mine with one that came off an e46 3 series as they are the same part (the Z is based on the e46 chassis). Cost me about £35 from a breaker on eBay.

Ah ok it's because it looked like metal until it came off. Will it cause my car any damage if I use it without the undertray ?

Should be ok - drove mine for ages without one when I first bought it... Though my OCD was tweaked and I just had to have it replaced :oops:

The replacement is about £100 from BMW though...
 
You say it's metal but then believe it to be plastic?

Theres both a metal under engine shield and a plastic undertray. One is silver and one is black, so which one is it?
 
Sorry guys I’m new here . Just wanted to ask what is the part called under the front fog light . It’s not the rngine guard . But there was another guard in both sides. Underneath the front bumper on the right side . Hit to kerb and that part is broken. It’s like under the fog light . Thank you
