This seems to be a common problem in the E85/86. I too thought it was due to the door seal around the tweeter area, since there always seemed to be water here whenever the door was opened after rain.
Anyway, I was also tired of the tinny door sound so bought 2 new door membranes and butyl stuff, and set about it. I also got the 2 sound dead pads from the facelift model, plus some acoustimat off EBay.
As soon as I got the door card off, it was clear that water was leaking through a gap in the butyl, where the bottom bolt of the door brace is located, about 6" from the front of the door. A few years ago, I had treated the roof with Renovo black dye, and this (very watery stuff) had run through the doors and left tell-tale black drip marks inside the door card. This car had never had the door cards off before, the membrane was undamaged, but I could get three fingers in the gap in the butyl, obviously a Friday afternoon job in South Carolina, plus a few of the clips were broken/bent, (not by me, no bits inside door). Funny, the passenger side had been done much more coscienciously.
The Butyl was a pig to remove, the only way to clean it all off, is to use more butyl to press on it and pull it away, bit by bit. It's horrible stuff, even the new cord from the dealer is coiled in a special non-stick plastic film, but my dealer used polythene sheet to measure out mine. Consequentially, it had bonded itself good & proper by the time I came to use it!
All in all, a messy slow job, but at least now hopefully I will have dry carpets and ..... IT SHUTS LIKE A GOLF!
