Merlot red - good or bad?

I reckon Merlot is a great colour, not that I'm biased ofcourse. The only thing you're missing is the tan leather to compliment it.

i nearly bought a Merlot.

wasnt sure about it from photos but in the flesh it is lovely.

definitely has an element of class about it as others have said

Bottom line is if you like it an plan to keep it a while go for it. If 2 year quick sale is what matters then go safe.

2 year quick sale? Christ I've never had a car for 2 years, over one year is long for me!

Saying that, struggling to think of a next step for me from the Z4, the things i'm looking at are a big step up in price rather than the usual slight imcrement....and I don't have the money lol.

I'm seeing my Z4 as a 5-year+ keeper, circumstances dependent. I usually keep cars 2-3 years (sometimes less) but it's never been about boredum, more about seeing something more appealing as money allows. Only thing at the moment that appeals would be a Z4M but got to stay realistic for me :(

That used to be me. A change of company car every 2 years on the dot and a change of private car as soon as something new came along, always moving on and upwards. These days I'm a bit older and wiser and had my X5 from new in 2001 and still unmarked. Z4 coming up to 3 and a couple of Jeeps for 6 and 10 years. No depreciation, known history, etc.

There has to be a 'wow' or a change of car requirements to stimulate a change these days.

Back to Merlot - my comment was that I think it's one of the rarer colours and that itself makes resale a little harder to sell, but it's one of those great colours, unlike some of the marmite colours out there.

uh - you changed your 2003 Z or do you think we live in 2006 now? :poke:

I do like the merlot, but only with tan leather though to be honest ...

I'd have to agree with that. I like it but.... But then again, if it's to keep long term, you're gettig the pleasure from it, go for it. Beige interior looks good with it, and not that hard to keep clean. Just don't let the mats get too dirty, or maybe get a spare set for winter.

On how long we keep our cars, it always surprises me we get so many mpg threads. Comared to what we spend changing the car, mpg savings are insignificant aren't they? I'd say ban any mpg threads from now, this is a sports car forum, after all

Merlot is a great colour for a Z. Shows off the lines nicely. I liked the Merlot with beige interior, and also nearly bought one, but plumped for Saphire Black with Beige instead as I found one with lower miles. If you like the colour, and the car is in nice condition with a good history, buy it, you'll love it.

What? 2003 zed purchased in 2007 coming up to 3 years ownership early 2010

Wow,

I didn't expect so many comments! This is the first time I have popped back to check out the responses! Thanks guys!

I guess the consensus is generally positive, I have to say some of the pictures posted of Merlot Zeds make it look a very attractive colour and I agree that it would come up beautifully with a professional detail. This is the car in question.....a 2003 3.0SE - an AUC car and seems to be well specced although I would have liked nav.

Thats a nice car zed4coupe

Accepting that there is an AUC dealer premium on that car, is it a good price? I have just spoken to the dealer and asked:

- 'would you be flexible on price, i have no p/x' answer 'no!'
- 'would the price include some road tax' answer 'no!'

I think that is a Stratstone policy!

Im no expert but I would say its slightly high...

negotiating is always better done in person you may go and find things that need doing which you can negotiate on etc.

Seems quite nice. Not seen that interior or grey hood before, so a bit out of the ordinary.

A friend of mine paid more than that for a similar mileage car on 17s privately in early summer. Maybe do a national search of BMW auc and see how it compares.

Fwiw always better to ask 'open' questions when bargaining like 'how flexible would you be etc'. Slightly harder to say no.

MAybe you could get them to add some bits, like mfsw?

Not sure about the price - they are all over the place at the moment! But yes, get down there in person for a test drive. If the sales person thinks there's some commission in the bank they're rather barter a little than lose it I'm sure. Or like Sticks said, try and get some FOC extras.

Car looks good though!

I'd say that was a fair price for a main dealer, low mileage, 3.0 xenons and 108's. Carries a valuable dealer warranty and all that's wrong is fixed up.

Of course they are flexible on price - they all are once you show interes then are ready to walk away. Find all the 3.0 on Ebay and Pistonheads at less to use as ammo.

Check the 108's carefully for intenal or external corrosion.

The warranty is probably worth at least £500-£600 on its own. I asked about the 108s and their condition. He said he had never ever heard of any kind of corrosion issues with them....yeah right! But I would demand that they were perfect if buying it.

I would love to go and have a look and take it for a drive but....I live on the other side of the country and this weekend is already very very busy. So I shall sit tight and if it is still there next weekend.....

EDIT...IT'S ALSO A ONE OWNER CAR.....

This is the other, non Merlot, 3.0SE I like, the combo is spot on, it doesn't have xenons and it is a grand dearer and has 10K more miles.

It's even further away....and no doubt there will be comments about wood trim in a sportscar! :P
