Currently in my taxi to our office in Munich in a new E class taxi. The nave system seems linked to the Autobahn variable speed limits as I've seen the speed limit indicator on the map update real time with the changing limits posted on the overhead signs.

Pretty useful Does the very connected BMW system in the E89 etc do this?

and that's quite clever and useful on the changing speed limit thingy

I hate Mercs. Had one for 3 years (E270CDi) and it was a pile of pants. Dealers service was also awful. Me and mercedes will no longer be as one.

Mrs cjp has a new shape focus, which does the same!! It uses cameras in the front window which picks up the speed limits and puts them on the dash

My eyes do that, but go a step further, interfacing to Mrs Five's brain and telling me to slow down... :wink:

The system in the F20 I tested drove did this. It made me think. If you aren't observant enough to see the big bloody sings at the side of the road then you shouldn't be driving.

The e89 doesn't have this feature, or the front camera to detect speed signs.

My TomTom was much better at such things!

on the sdrive satnav system in general, i find it a bit disappointing. tom tom and garmin units go down to spoken street name level these days, which the sdrive doesn't. my wife's audi satnav has a neat little simpified diagram down to street name level, as well as the colour screen with the big picture.

will we get any improvement with future software updates?

Some interesting comments. I'm thinking of the circular car park known as the M25 and how often the limits change during rush hour. I've often wondered if I was going to get ticketed after its gone from 60 to 40 between gantries.

If that system creates a bong, like the TomTom and Garmin units can, it's a useful driver aide

I was a victim of the M25 variable speed limit a few years ago. A satnav warning would be useful, but there again the speed limits are pretty clearly given on the overhead gantries.

There's definitely a delay between the sign changing and the limit changing on the cameras, can't remember where I read this. I think there's some sort of self calibration thing too - if it doesn't light up correctly it doesn't arm.

Sars if you get one, I'll bring my hacksaw over to saw off the shark fin on the rear boot!! And some black tape to strap down the wind deflector on the front windscreen!!!
